SOMers -- The Six Month Review
Permalink

We consider SOMers a work in progress.  We are always considering how we might improve.  One of the things you will notice this month is that the SOMersville Gazette moved from the Administrative Section to the Stratomatic Baseball Section.  Another idea is to add some more sections/categoires.  For instance, one suggestion has been to add a section an “open microphone lite” section where members can have general discussion, aside from stratomatic and baseball (but avoiding heavy topics such as religion and political issues and leaders).  Another idea is to start a Fantasy/Rotisserie Baseball section.

But what would really help us is to know your thinking.  We’d like your input and ideas.  Do you like what we proposed -- or do you have some other ideas.  As Frasier Crane used to say, "I'm listening" -- or in our case, "We're listening."

I think the idea of a category for general discussion would be great.

I know I sometimes love to just shoot the breeze on whatever is happening (concerts, vacation trips, you name it). I'm sure Nitrous and I could go through pages and pages of thread space, just swapping "sea stories," (even excluding the ones that might not make it past the ratings board).

How about a section about other Strat-O-Matic sports games, if enough people ask for it.

While we have tried to maintain a specific focus in our first few months, we are now at the point where we can begin to open things up, a bit.

Any other ideas out there?

I hear you, Seajaw -- and that's why we agreed to throw this out to SOMers members.

But as you know, what I want to guard against is having so many categories that it becomes unwieldy and hard to find topics that you want to participate in or track.

As you know, I play fantasy baseball and would like to have a category or a forum that focuses on that topic, too.  I wonder how many of our members play fantasy baseball and if they would like it discussed here.  (For example, I drafted Jose Bautista and I would like to know what people think I should expect from him in 2011?  Was last year a fluke or is he a late bloomer?)

Maybe we are missing some obvious topics that our membership would enjoy having.

Then again, maybe the feeling is we should stick to our knitting (i.e., baseball and SOM).  Maybe members think we have too many sections and should combine some together.

Or maybe they think we got it right the first time. I would love some input.

This is a good idea. It minimizes catagories and encourages participation because its not specific. In addition folks tend to look there just to see what is being discussed.

I always use "Recent Posts" to find threads. It takes a bit of time to navigate through all the various categories, but maybe I'm just too lazy.

I think most of us go to Recent Posts.  But when I want to start a topic or sometimes when I first come to site, I will look over the categories.

I like the idea of a "catch all" type section for shooting the breeze about non baseball or strat related topics. SOMers makes up 99% of my online forum activities and I view the others on this site as friends.

Thanks for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

First off my opinion after 6 month is that this place is the best SOM forum out there.

I think the charm of this place so far in my opinion is that it focus's on Baseball. I have no interest in other sports or strat-o-matic games so I would vote not to expand it to the other games. Im also not sure how general chat really fits in with all the baseball stuff but an addition of "general" wouldnt deter me from looking at the forum.

Thanks Seajaw and TallT for putting this all together.

A great site no doubt. No matter what you do recent posts will rule I think.

Here's an idea that I had...A thread with all the different active lgs in it. A sorta recap of all the lgs here at SOMers and where they stand in one thread on maybe a monthly basis.

Related note-I'm interested in comparing 2 or more lgs that were similar (same yr similar set up). I one time went thru all the various sites and crossed refrenced the diffrent years that had been played. Some years had quite a few finished replays to read up on by different gamers. I never finished doing that but one day I may and would be interested in the comparisons as to rl as well.

One thing has got to go though, get that dirtbag terrorist's name off the heading of the forum. I know the discussion is warranted and is amoungst you guys that served, but who wants to see that name at the top of our forum? Not bad that this is the only con I see.

Thanks Seajaw and TallT for putting this all together.

You're welcome.  And thanks to you and everyone else who has come along for the ride.

The Bin Laden thread served its purpose and has run its course.  It was good to have a chance to "vent" a bit.

I also liked sharing some stories with our fellow vets, although those were off the beaten trail from the main topic.

While the "sea stories" necessarily drew upon the experiences of just a few of us, I hope they were enjoyable and informative to the rest of our membership.

It wasn't for just a few of us though.  I'm sure we'd all welcome any questions or comments.

I think a General Topics category would allow for a further cementing of friendships among our members, and chance to expand our common interests a bit.

Among other things, I'd like to have a chance to find out more about where everyone hails from.  As everyone knows, we have a half-dozen members from around the Puget Sound area.

Wouldn't you like to find out if anyone here lives anywhere near you?  This is for everyone here.  Anyone else have "neighbors" amongst the SOMers base?

That sounds like a fascinating project.

Just imagine having the complete results of all the posted season replays everyone has played over the years, and comparing them, to find out just how well the folks at SOM did their jobs!

Maybe you can share some of the results some time.

At the end of my 1930 season, I did some comparative results, with the standings from my season, the full-length results, had my season gone the distance, the actual 154-game MLB season, and the Pythagorean-based predicted finish.

As you know, I have completed 1911, 1920, 1924, 1927, and 1930.  I'm waiting until stargell8's 1911 season is finished to post those here.

A General category for the exact reasons Seaj pointed out would be nice.
And, Clutch's suggestion sounds like a winner.
Yes, Bin Laden's name could be removed, and yes, we did stray off topic with our travels and experiences, and yes, it felt good to vent upon Bin Laden.
And yes, as Seaj stated, talking about our service days or answering questions is welcome.

Personally, I do understand there are Baseball only fans here, but in the interest of expanding membership, if that is a concern, implementing the other sports would satisfy that goal.

TT's concern of complicating easy navigation was something I also had considered, however, I'm sure there is a format that could be organized that would not compromise the current format.

First and foremost, we appreciate all the feedback we are receiving -- and we hope you keep it coming.  Your comments are helping to crystallize our thoughts into specific actions we may take.

With regards to Clutch's suggestion a recap of the leagues, (I assume he means historical replays and projects on SOMers), do you think if we expanded the "In The Threads" section in the SOMersville Gazette (which currently provides a very brief synopsis of a few threads) would be sufficient?   Is the information provided in the SOMersville Gazette synopsis of the leagues sufficient?  If not, what other kinds of information should be included?  Maybe we could organize it as a chart?  Probably, a bit definitional, but in order to be included in the Gazette, the thread author would have had to updated his/her thread four or five times during the month.  I assume if we wrote the thread authors, they would be willing to draft a short sentence or two about their project and where it stands and send it to us in a timely fashion for the Gazette.  (We occassionally like to roll the Strat dice, too!)

Also, would it be helpful, if within the Replay and Project categories, if we provided an archive or completed replay/project subsection?  The threads would remain open and people could still comment on them, but they would be separated from the active leagues where new updates are being posted.

There has been some discussion about other strat games.  This site is primarily about baseball -- either Stratomatic or Major League, but if it makes sense, to add space for the discussion of other Strat products.  It would be helpful to have some more discussion on the topic.

There will be moments that are so historic and important to our nation that they require a place in our forum.  In my lifetime, other such moments may have included:  9/11, first man on the moon, Space Challenger explosion, US Hockey Team defeating the Soviet Union, Operation Desert Storm, and the freeing of Americans from captivity in Iran.  The point is these moments are far and few between.

But when they do arise, we should have a place to discuss them.  Such was the case when a mission was led to kill Osama Bin Laden.  That's why I started the USA section and I thank Scorpio Rising2 for starting a thread there.  (I understand that WhiteSoxStrat was not questioning the reason for starting the thread or even creating the category.)  I still think that we are close to that event and will leave it where it is a bit longer.  (Scorpio if you have an alternative name for the thread please send me a PM.)

Again thanks for your thoughts.  They are very helpful.  We are looking forward to more of them.

Tall..It's just an idea I threw out there. I just re-read Mays Gazette and It notes a few lgs. I WAS thinking something more along the lines of 1) standings 2) reigning champ if applicable 3)maybe top 5's in a few major categories, maybe prorated to 162 games so to be easy to compare to other lgs. 4)brief synopsis of what's ahead maybe an 'ETA' for your playoffs/championship.

Of course the thread author would have to get that stuff in by a certain day each month. I envision ALL lgs posted here at the SOMers site being lined up side by side w/ brief synopsis on where they are. Just to kinda tidy it up. Even some folks who only post 1 or 2 times a month. I see some post few times a month but they do keep the ball rolling like the 88 random guy. Just an idea.

The thought of comparing projects was a separate idea. I don't have time for that one right now.

Either way you do it I'm sure it will be fine...

Hey Clutch, thanks for elaborating on your thoughts.  I hope others will chime in with their thoughts on Clutch's idea as well as others that have been suggested here.
