Help getting old version to work
Permalink

I purchased the computer game several years ago and I have upgraded my computer from Windows 98 to XP for some time now. When I did that, I left the old W98 drive in (containing the game and all its files in the SOMBB folder) and set it up as the slave drive (D:) and installed a new drive and XP.

With more time on my hands now, I am trying to see if I can use the old game from the D: drive and it will not work. It is version 6.5 and is probably 12 years old. The somutil.exe works fine, but the playb.exe errors out (Fatal error - internal problem #711). I can assume it is a license key problem and it does the same thing whether I run it from its D: folder or afgter I copied everything over to the C: drive.

I am hoping there is a way to uninstall and reinstall the key to make the progam work again. I haven't called SOM yet, was kind of hopng someone has been down this road already.

Thanks,

Brad

Welcome to the site.

So you are trying to run the program that is still installed on your W98 old hard drive. If you reinstall it on your current drive it should work. You still have your key disk and that was supported until V16.

I looked up error 711. It is an operating system error.

I didn’t have the computer game before the current authorization system, so I’m speaking a little out of turn.  If it was today you would have to deauthorize the games and seasons before uninstalling it.  If you disks aren’t working you are stuck. Strat quit doing the conversion from disk to code at reduced prices about a year ago.
