Thought I would share the results of our draft so far since most of the bigger names have been picked. It would be great to hear some of your comments on the draft. Which teams do you think will be competing for a title? Which ones are headed for the lottery? Which ones stuck in the middle of the pack?

Follow lives picks here: http://somhoops.com/retro70/draft/

That was the era that I first started watching the NBA.  It pains me to see so many guys I identify with as Sonics (Lenny Wilkens, Dick "The Duck" Snyder, Spencer Haywood, Pete Cross, Lucious Allen, Lee Winfield, Gar Heard, Don Smith, Rod Thorn) going elsewhere.

Those were my guys.  Center Bob Rule started the season like a house on fire, then tore up his achilles tendon in the fourth game of the season.  That effectively ended his career.

Rookie Pete Cross stepped in and was a pugnacious and powerful presence on the boards.  He was second in a stat called Total Rebound Percentage, which is an estimate of the percentage of total rebounds available grabbed by a player while is on the floor.  Cross finished with a 19.8.

Man, I remember this stuff like it was yesterday (though it was today that I actually learned of the TRB% stat, thanks to www.basketball-reference.com)!

I used to hang around, getting autographs from guys like Dollar Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, the Hawk, Jerry West, the Big O, Earl the Pearl.  Got a bunch of 'em!

Maybe I'll scan and post a few as the season progresses.

It's a keeper league where we protect 8-players each season and then draft back up to 15 through the rookie-free agent draft. The league is a knowoff of our Classic80 league (http://www.somhoops.com/classic80/) finishing up our 7th season.

The reason we have a team named Seattle is one of our coaches lives in the Seattle area. Rather than using NBA team names/nicknames, coaches have to name their own team.

Nice to hear you mention an advanced stat like Rebound Percentage! It's really an important NBA stat to follow I beleive since .(1) the computer rebound system also adjusts for pace for its rebound ratings and (2) rebounding is one of the top three areas to pay attention to when building a draft league team along with Dazzlers and one or two rated shooters with top shooting columns in the set.

Sounds like this would have been a fun league for you, seajaw, having followed the NBA/ABA during the 1970's. If we get an opening in the league I will have to keep you in mind.
