West Pod #2--#15 2011 Detroit Tigers v. #6 2013 St. Louis Cardinals (Dodger Stadium)

LOS ANGELES -- The St. Louis Cardinals were no match for Justin Verlander on Thursday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.  Verlander was dominant allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out eight in a complete game shutout as his Detroit Tigers won 4-0.  The 2013 National League Champs had just two runners in scoring position all day and at one point Verlander retired 24 of 25 batters he faced.  Miguel Cabrera led off the second inning with a solo shot to deep left off Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright to produce the games first run.  The score stayed that way until the sixth inning when the Tigers did the rest of the their damage off the St. Louis right-hander.  Wainwright started off the inning retiring the first two batters rather easily but then made a mistake to Brennan Boesch as he sailed a pitch into the right field bleachers to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Delmon Young and Cabrera both singled and Victor Martinez was walked intentionally to bring up Wilson Betemit.  Betemit came through lacing a single to left center to score two more runs and put the game out of reach with Verlander on the mound.  It was a much earlier exit from the tournament than the sixth seeded Cardinals were expecting but not many teams would have had a chance against Verlander on this day.  Detroit now moves on to Saturday and will play the winner of the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates and 2011 Milwaukee Brewers in a game taking place here in Los Angeles later tonight.

NEW YORK -- Roy Oswalt and Josh Johnson battled each other tooth and nail but in the end Oswalt, with some ninth inning help from Jose Valverde, came out the victor.  Johnson arguably pitched a better game, even though he did allow the game's only run, but Oswalt made the big pitches when he needed to to give the Houston Astros a 1-0 victory over the Florida Marlins.  Oswalt went eight innings allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out nine for the win.  Johnson, in a tough luck losing effort, allowed one run and only three hits and two walks while striking out 11 Astros hitters.  The fourth inning is where Houston got to Johnson as Lance Berkman doubled around two outs putting a man in scoring position for Hunter Pence.  Pence came through with a double down the left field line to drive in Berkman for the game's only run.  Oswalt walked John Baker to leadoff the ninth inning before being relieved by closer Valverde.  Valverde got Dan Uggla to ground into a double play but then allowed a single to Ross Gload and a stolen base by pinch runner Emilio Bonifacio to put the tying run in scoring position with two outs and leadoff hitter Chris Coghlan coming to the plate.  Valverde came through getting Coghlan to go down swinging to preserve the victory and eliminate the Marlins from the tournament.  The Astros, meanwhile, move on to face the Minnesota Twins here at Yankee Stadium on Saturday at Noon.

West Pod #2--#19 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates v. #12 2011 Milwaukee Brewers (Dodger Stadium)

LOS ANGELES -- The last game of the day was a tight one between National League Central division rivals as the Milwaukee Brewers squeaked by the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 4-3 on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.  The Pirates got on the board in the top of the third on a one-out triple off the bat of Starling Marte and that was followed by a sacrifice fly from Neil Walker to produce the games first run.  Milwaukee came storming back in the bottom of the inning plating three runs off Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett.  With one out Nyjer Morgan laced a double to right center to score Jerry Hairston and Corey Hart to put the Brewers up 2-1.  Ryan Braun followed with a single to score Morgan and give Milwaukee an early two-run cushion.  The Pirates bounced back the next inning to draw within one run on a Pedro Alvarez solo shot to right center off Yovani Gallardo but Milwaukee got that run right back in the bottom half on a leadoff blast from Rickie Weeks.  The score stayed 4-2 until the seventh inning when Andrew McCutchen lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to bring home Jordy Mercer.  McCutchen just missed a three-run home run on the pitch from reliever Takashi Saito as he hit it to the wall of the longest part of the ballpark.  Milwaukee closer John Axford came on in the ninth and retired the first two batters he faced before hitting Marte and giving up a single to Walker to put runners on the corners.  That brought All-Star McCutchen to the plate but Axford got him hit a one hopper to short for the games final out.  With the win Milwaukee advances to play the 2011 Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon while the Pirates tournament is now over.

Been gone for quite a while but this tournament was played out and I'm going to post the finished results for anyone who cares.  I'll probably just post the box scores as it's been a while since I've played these games.
