THE KEYSTONE BASEBALL LEAGUE - A SOLO DRAFT PROJECT

With my Negro League project in the home stretch, I have decided it's time to introduce my next project. I have really enjoyed playing with the Negro League cards and I haven't done anything with the HOF or Heroes sets in their C&D form in a while, so I decided on this project. The following will be what the project is about:

"The Keystone Baseball League - A Solo Draft Project" is a six-team league based in the Keystone State; Pennsylvania. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA and have lived here for all my life (20 years to be exact). I thought it would be cool to create a fictional league based in the state I live in using some of Strat-O-Matic's most prized sets; The Hall of Fame, Heroes, and Negro League All-Star cards.

Each team in the league is from a city, town, or general area in Pennsylvania, and I have decided to start out with an Original Six as you might say and then as the league forms its own history, possibly expand, maybe even double in size after so many seasons. Every team taking part in the KBL (I will often abbreviate the Keystone Baseball League with that acronym) will play the other five teams in the league four times (2 home, 2 away) for a total of 20 ballgames. I wanted to keep this short and sweet, as I want to form a league history pretty quickly. Here are some particulars:

  • This project will be played in Basic C&D with a few of my modifications.
  • These modifcations include and are not limited to my chart on when runners are allowed to steal and my chart on when to remove a starting pitcher. (Any questions, do ask).
  • Rosters will be fairly small because of the super-short 20-game season. Each team will roster 15 total players. (9 position players and six pitchers).
  • Because of the short rosters, I will allow each starting batter to play every game. You will see why I do this below. Also, there will be a DH and no injuries. There will be four starters, a long man, and a closer.
  • All six teams will make the playoffs after the end of the season with the top two teams receiving first round byes. The first round will be a do-or-die game like the wildcard game is in the Major Leagues today (I really like it, I may be in the minority but it puts more on winning in the regular season). The Semi-Finals will be a best-of-three series, and then the Keystone Series will be best-of-seven with the winner taking home the Keystone Cup.

So how exactly will this be a solo draft project? Easy. The six original franchises will draft 15 players (9 position players and six pitchers) to start. Then after each season there will be an injury draft. When players are injured during the course of the season they will not be removed from the game, however, their name will be written down on the injury sheet. After the season is over, teams will look at their injury chart and select who they will send into the draft. Each team will send three players into the draft (two position players and one pitcher).

This system mimics me having to decide on trades and contracts and really lets the players play and see where they end up. Now let's say Team A has just one position player get hurt, that player must go into the draft, but they can select what other player gets to go into the draft. So say you have a weaker hitter, you'd want to send him because you can try getting someone better in the draft. If anyone following needs to explain this any better I will try my best to.

After the season is over the injury draft will be held, with the last place team picking first and the Keystone Cup winner selecting last. This should shake the teams up a little bit, but not too much as each team will still have their starting foundation. But as the years go on in this fantasy universe, it will be cool to watch leaders, record books, and franchise histories be born.

Here are the six teams competing (to start at least) in the Keystone Baseball League:

York White Roses

Lancaster Red Roses

Scranton Electrics

Harrisburg Senators

Allentown Fleetwings

Bethlehem Steelers

I will be releasing the team rosters later today or early tomorrow morning. Hope you guys will enjoy following along. This should definitely be one of my favorite projects to put together.

This will be will be a quick and fun project to follow along.

If I understand correctly, as you progress you will have expansion teams and if so that would be cool to see how the history of league progresses.

Thanks for checking in strat. Yes you are correct. I would love to expand the league. These teams included in the start are all based in the Eastern part of the state, and it has been said that if it has success that the Pittsburgh-area and Western cities want to be included.

I have really enjoyed putting this together. I think by keeping it short, and having the teams based in places I have been to, and know will mean I will be able to keep myself interested.

I tried that Any Given Sunday project last summer, and I enjoyed that, but there was just something missing. I think this will be the golden ticket as far as my solo draft projects have gone.

I, too think it will be cool to see how the league progresses and franchises start making a name for themselves.

Keystone Baseball League Team Preview

ALLENTOWN FLEETWINGS

PITCHERS: Ed Walsh, Bob Gibson, Cy Young, Steve Carlton, Wilbur Cooper, Addie Joss. CATCHER: Mike Piazza. INFIELDERS: Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, George Brett, Pop Lloyd. OUTFIELDERS: Ralph Kiner, Ken Griffey Jr, Sammy Sosa, Ty Cobb.

FLEETWINGS OUTLOOK: The Fleetwings boast a very very good rotation bolstered by no other than Cy Young himself. They also have a very powerful lineup with Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig, Ralph Kiner, Sammy Sosa, and Mike Piazza. Watch out for this squad, as they did not have the best autoplays (finished averaging ten wins after three autoplays) but I think they could breakout.

BETHLEHEM STEELERS

PITCHERS: Smokey Joe Williams, Tim Keefe, Christy Mathewson, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Gaylord Perry. CATCHER: Roy Campanella. INFIELDERS: Mark McGwire, Joe Morgan, Eddie Mathews, George Davis, Joe Morgan. OUTFIELDERS: Reggie Jackson, Turkey Stearnes, Larry Walker.

STEELERS OUTLOOK: The Steelers posted a 13-win, a 6-win, and 11-win seasons in the three autoplays so it's tough to really see how good this team could be. With a staff lead by Christy Mathewson and Negro League great Smokey Joe Williams it's easy to see that this squad could be good for quite a while.

HARRISBURG SENATORS

PITCHERS: Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver, Big Bill Foster, Babe Adams, Nolan Ryan, Babe Ruth. CATCHER: Johnny Bench. INFIELDERS: Jimmie Foxx, Jeff Kent, Harmon Killebrew, Martin DiHigo. OUTFIELDERS: Mel Ott, Duke Snider, Babe Ruth, Willie Stargell.

SENATORS OUTLOOK: Look at the rotation the Senators have! Koufax, Seaver, Ryan, Foster, Ruth, and last but certainly not least, Babe Adams. This team will definitely be racking up the strikeouts on the pitching mound. However, they will need to limit those strikeouts when on offense. Babe Ruth was the Senators' first pick in the draft, and a solid one at that as he looks to bring home the first ever Keystone Cup to the state capital.

LANCASTER RED ROSES

PITCHERS: Hilton Smith, Three Finger Brown, Roger Clemens, Old Hoss Radbourn, Leroy Matlock, Jim Palmer. CATCHER: Biz Mackey. INFIELDERS: Frank Thomas, Tubby Scales, Mike Schmidt, Willie Wells, Mule Suttles. OUTFIELDERS: Carl Yastrzemski, Oscar Charleston, Hank Aaron.

RED ROSES OUTLOOK: My oh my. Opposing pitching staffs may want to run the other way when they come across this lineup. Boasted by Negro League guys like Willie Wells, Mule Suttles, Oscar Charleston, and Biz Mackey they form what Willie Wells calls "The Fearsome Foursome". The pitching staff isn't too bad either, with Three Finger Brown and Hilton Smith leading the way. The Red Roses averaged 14 wins per season in the three autoplays, so this squad may be the team to beat.

SCRANTON ELECTRICS

PITCHERS: Max Manning, Greg Maddux, Satchel Paige, Rube Waddell, Mickey Welch, Ray Brown. CATCHER: Mickey Cochrane. INFIELDERS: Jeff Bagwell, Nap Lajoie, John Beckwith, Ernie Banks, Buck Ewing. OUTFIELDERS: Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson.

ELECTRICS OUTLOOK: The Scranton Electrics have a very powerful starting rotation led by Max Manning, Greg Maddux, and Satchel Paige. Then on top of that they have big bashers in Jeff Bagwell, John Beckwith, Willie Mays, and Barry Bonds. Surprisingly, they only averaged nine wins per season in the autoplays, but I think this team could be on the radar of being truly great.

YORK WHITE ROSES

PITCHERS: Walter Johnson, Pete Alexander, Juan Marichal, Slim Jones, Nip Winters, Vida Blue. CATCHER: Josh Gibson. INFIELDERS: Hank Greenberg, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, Honus Wagner. OUTFIELDERS: Albert Belle, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Chino Smith.

WHITE ROSES OUTLOOK: The York White Roses also have a very solid team all-around. Their first overall pick Josh Gibson will lead the way, as Honus Wagner will bat first, nothing like having two guys with Pittsburgh-area ties on your squad. However, the White Roses also have one of the most solid outfields in the league with Albert Belle, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, and Chino Smith roaming the green.

Well, there is the season preview for you guys. Once I finish up my Negro League project, expect this one to start up. I should be able to get through these draft seasons pretty quickly, with just six teams and 60 games to play total. Pick a squad and cheer them on to victory! Hope you guys will enjoy following.

Wow! Love these logos! I assume these were created in Photoshop or something similar? Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

A friend of mine helped me out with some of them, he is a whiz at photoshop.

I just made a sample pennant for the Sharon Hustlers though. But welcome to the forum!!! Glad you're aboard with the replay.

I made some edits to the Sharon Hustlers logo...don't know if it's too busy or not though.

Love the Hustler's logo ... as well as the others.  I'll be pulling for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre team.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I've dabbled in Strat over the years while lurking in these forums for some time, but I'm all in now!

I really like the Hustlers logo and pennant. You've got a knack for creativity!

Thanks Gary! I think the Electrics might be my favorite logo, though it's a tough call. All of them are stunning.

As for the squads, I think I am rooting for Red Roses of Lancaster!
