Harrisburg Senators at Bethlehem Steelers (Games 1-2)

The Harrisburg Senators would open up their opening series with a league first; a sweep. The Senators brought the bats in this one, outscoring the Steelers 23-11 in a couple high-scoring affairs. We also saw some critical injuries, as this could hurt both teams at season's end.

Game 1 - The Senators jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st, and the game would stay mostly silent with the bats until the 8th when the Senators blasted three home runs in the inning including back-to-back blasts from Jimmie Foxx and Duke Snider to give the Senators a commanding 9-1 advantage. Larry Walker accounted for all the scoring for the Steelers in this one, smacking two home runs and driving in all four runs. HAR 9, BTH 4

HAR 300 000 060 - 9 14 0 (1-0)

BTH 000 001 003 - 4  6 1 (0-1)

Win: Foster (1-0)

Loss: Keefe (0-1)

HR: M.Ott (1st), J.Foxx (1st), D.Snider (1st), L.Walker-2 (2nd)

Injury Report: H. Killebrew (HAR), Larry Walker (BTH)

Game 2 - Once again, the Senators would bring the bats along. They would double up the Steelers in which looked a lot like a football score as they beat them two touchdowns to one. Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, and Willie Stargell each drove in three runs for the Senators. Meanwhile, Larry Walker went 3 for 5 with another two home runs and four more runs batted in to give him back-to-backf four-homer games. HAR 14, BTH 7

HAR 010 044 050 - 14 13 0 (2-0)

BTH 000 023 020 -  7  9 0 (0-2)

Win: Seaver (1-0)

Loss: Mathewson (0-1)

Save: Ruth (1st)

HR: M.Ott (2nd), H.Killebrew (1st), L.Walker-2 (4th), M.McGwire (1st)

Injury Report: T.Williams (BTH)

It definitely wasn't pretty...

I forgot how powerful these lineups were. Literally some of these teams have 30+ homer guys batting 7th and 8th! Talk about great lineups.

I would hate to be a pitcher going up against these guys.

Harrisburg Senators at York White Roses (Games 3-4)

The York White Roses and Harrisburg Senators would split the two-game set, as the Senators still maintain their first place spot in the standings with a 3-1 record. Meanwhile, the White Roses are still playing .500 ball.

Game 1 - It was looking to be one for the ages, with Harrisburg's Sandy Koufax taking on York's Juan Marichal, just like their Dodger-Giant days, but Koufax would get roughed up in this one, as he gave up nine runs on ten hits in just five innings of work. His counterpart Juan Marichal fared much better, he he tossed a complete game allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out ten batters. Chino Smith continued to hit, as he smacked two homers and drove in four. YRK 10, HAR 3

HAR 010 000 020 -  3  9 1 (2-1)

YRK 113 040 10X - 10 13 0 (2-1)

Win: Marichal (1-0)

Loss: Koufax (0-1)

HR: M.DiHigo (1st), J.Foxx (2nd), C.Smith-2 (2nd), H.Greenberg (1st)

Injury Report: Jimmie Foxx (HAR)

Game 2 - After taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the 1st, the Harrisburg Senators found themselves on the verge of being swept. They trailed 8-1 heading into the top of the 6th, but what happened after that will definitely be talked about on Sportscenter. The Senators rallied for seven runs in the top half of the 6th to tie the game up at eight. An inning later, they would break the tie as Willie Stargell hit a solo home run that proved to be the game-winner. Nolan Ryan picked up the win, as he struck out 13 batters in eight innings. HAR 9, YRK 8

HAR 100 007 100 - 9 11 0 (3-1)

YRK 130 310 000 - 8  8 1 (2-2)

Win: Ryan (1-0)

Loss: Blue (0-1)

Save: Ruth (2nd)

HR: M.Ott (3rd), W.Stargell (1st), J.Gibson (1st), H.Greenberg (2nd)

Injury Report: Mike Piazza (YRK)

Thanks MB. Sure have been some crazy comebacks so far, I am really enjoying it. I stayed up late last night just to roll some games.

Scranton Electrics at Bethlehem Steelers (Games 3-4)

The Scranton Electrics and Bethlehem Steelers would follow suit with the teams splitting series, as they would split this one as well. Scranton would outscore Bethlehem 15-6 but could only come away with a single win.

Game 1 - Satchel Paige was on his game, and if you followed my Negro League project where he pitched with the Homestead Grays, he never had an outing like this once. Paige went all nine for a complete game shutout as he only allowed two hits, both coming to George Davis and struck out six in a dominant performance. The offense helped him out too, as they scored ten runs. Three of those came via Jeff Bagwell who homered twice on the afternoon. SCR 10, BTH 0

SCR 104 020 120 - 10 15 0 (2-1)

BTH 000 000 000 -  0  2 0 (0-3)

Win: Paige (1-0)

Loss: Williams (0-1)

HR: B.Bonds (2nd), J.Bagwell-2 (3rd), B.Ewing (1st)

Game 2 - Down 4-2 in the 7th, the Scranton Electrics would rally for three runs in the inning, thanks to a triple from Buck Ewing, a double from Nap Lajoie and Lajoie would come around to score on an error by third baseman Eddie Mathews. However, in the bottom of the inning the Steelers would platw two runs via back-to-back bases loaded walks by Ray Brown as Eddie Mathews would clinch the game-winning RBI. BTH 6, SCR 5

SCR 000 002 300 - 5  8 1 (2-2)

BTH 001 030 20X - 6 10 1 (1-3)

Win: Plank (1-0)

Loss: Brown (0-1)

Save: Bender (1st)

HR: F.Robinson (1st), T.Stearnes (1st)

Lancaster Red Roses at Allentown Fleetwings (Games 3-4)

The Lancaster Red Roses took both games of the two-game series against the Allentown Fleetwings, outscoring them 18 to 8 in the two games combined. The Red Roses look very dangerous so far, with great pitching and a solid offense they are a team to keep your eye on as the season moves forward.

Game 1 - This game was all Red Roses from the start, as they would ease themselves into a 5-0 lead before the Fleetwings finally got onto the board. The Red Roses also drilled four home runs on the day, as Carl Yastrzemski led the way going 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run, and three runs batted in. LAN 7, ALL 3

LAN 001 131 010 - 7 10 1 (2-1)

ALL 000 010 110 - 3  8 0 (1-2)

Win: Brown (1-0)

Loss: Joss (0-1)

HR: T.Scales (1st), W.Wells (2nd), C.Yastrzemski (1st), M.Schmidt (3rd), M.Piazza (2nd)

Game 4 - The Red Roses would complete the sweep of the Allentown Fleetwings with another impressive day of smacking the baseball around. They would cross the plate 11 times on 14 hits and also blasted another four home runs. Tubby Scales, Willie Wells, and Hank Aaron all had three-hit days. LAN 11, ALL 5

LAN 131 200 310 - 11 14 0 (3-1)

ALL 000 000 230 -  5  9 1 (1-3)

Win: Clemens (1-0)

Loss: Gibson (0-1)

HR: T.Scales (2nd), M.Suttles (2nd), W.Wells (3rd), H.Aaron (2nd), L.Gehrig (1st), K.Griffey Jr (1st)

Allentown Fleetwings at Bethlehem Steelers (Games 5-6)

After a shaky first two blocks, the Bethlehem Steelers played a fantastic series against the Allentown Fleetwings, sweeping the series and winning on a pair of walk-off hits...more on this story below.

Game 1 - Bethlehem was first on the board in the bottom of the 1st with a Ted Williams sacrifice fly to give the Steelers the early 1-0 advantage. The game would stay 1-0 until the top of the 9th when Allentown scored two runs on a Lou Gehrig triple and a Mike Piazza single. It looked like hope was lost, but in the bottom of the inning the Steelers would tie the game on a Mark McGwire sacrifice fly to make it 2-2. An inning later, and with one out, Reggie Jackson would crush a solo homer to give the Steelers a walk-off win. BTH 3, ALL 2

ALL 000 000 002 0 - 2 6 0 (1-4)

BTH 100 000 001 1 - 3 6 0 (2-3)

Win: Keefe (1-1)

Loss: Young (0-2)

HR: R.Jackson (1st)

Game 2 - It would be another wild game in the series finale, as the Fleetwings would score five runs in the 5th to break open the scoreless game on a two-run double from Lou Gehrig and a two-run homer from Mike Piazza. However, the Steelers would work themselves back into the game, scoring once in the 5th, twice in the 6th, and twice more in the 7th to tie the game. In the top of the 9th, the Fleetwings would score on a Pop Lloyd triple to give them a 6-5 lead. Steve Carlton would come on for the save, but he would do the exact opposite of that, as with two outs, he gave up back-to-back singles to Joe Morgan and George Davis, the latter being a walk-off as the Fleetwings are heartbroken once more. BTH 7, ALL 6

ALL 000 050 001 - 6 12 1 (1-5)

BTH 000 012 202 - 7 15 0 (3-3)

Win: Perry (1-0)

Loss: Carlton (0-1)

HR: M.Piazza (3rd), J.Morgan (1st)

Injury Report: M.Piazza (ALL)

 vs.

Scranton Electrics at York White Roses (Games 5-6)

It was two very close games, but it may have not looked that way on the scoreboard, as the Scranton Electrics and York White Roses split the two-game set as they both stick to playing .500 baseball.

Game 1 - It was one of the greatest showings of offense so far this seaon, as the White Roses and Electrics combined for 25 runs on 37 hits and left just 14 runners stranded, but the Electrics would be victorious by the score of 15 to 10. The Electrics had the home run ball working, as they belted six on the day while the White Roses added another two. John Beckwith led the Electrics, going 4 for 6 with a double, a home run, and five runs batted in. SCR 15, YRK 10

SCR 520 004 013 - 15 18 0 (3-2)

YRK 200 051 020 - 10 19 0 (2-3)

Win: Welch (2-0)

Loss: Alexander (0-2)

HR: B.Bonds (3rd), J.Beckwith (1st), W.Mays (2nd), J.Bagwell (4th), E.Banks-2 (4th), M.Mantle (1st), J.DiMaggio (1st)

Game 2 - The White Roses trailed 1-0 in the 6th after Barry Bonds hit his 4th home run of the season, but the White Roses would finally storm back. They plated six runs in the 6th, the highlights of the inning coming when Chino Smith tripled home two base runners and Ron Santo singled home another two. YRK 6, SCR 4

SCR 100 000 030 - 4 11 0 (3-3)

YRK 000 006 00X - 6  7 0 (3-3)

Win: Johnson (2-0)

Loss: Waddell (0-2)

Save: Jones (1st)

HR: B.Bonds (4th)

 vs.

Lancaster Red Roses at Harrisburg Senators (Games 5-6)

It was a matchup between the Keystone's top two teams in the standings, and the two teams would stay tied atop the standings after this series, as Lancaster and Harrisburg each won one game of the two-game set.

Game 1 - Johnny Bench did it all for the Senators in this game, he called a great game to get his pitcher Big Bill Foster a complete game win and he also homered and drove in all four runs for his team as he seems to be heating up. Old Hoss Radbourn tossed eight innings allowing just four hits, but gave up four runs in the process. HAR 4, LAN 1

LAN 000 000 010 - 1 7 1 (3-2)

HAR 000 103 00X - 4 4 0 (4-1)

Win: Foster (2-0)

Loss: Radbourn (1-1)

HR: F.Thomas (2nd), J.Bench (1st)

Game 2 - After a disappointing game against Big Bill Foster in the opener, the Lancaster Red Roses knew they could not let themselves get swept here, and they wouldn't. They would score eight runs on the day and get Hilton Smith to earn his 1st save as they top the Senators and earn a series split. Mike Schmidt continues to swing a hot bat for the Red Roses, he homered twice in this one, giving him a league-leading five home runs in just six games. LAN 8, HAR 5

LAN 003 012 020 - 8 11 1 (4-2)

HAR 200 100 020 - 5  7 0 (4-2)

Win: Palmer (1-0)

Loss: Seaver (1-1)

Save: Smith (1st)

HR: M.Suttles (3rd), F.Thomas (3rd), M.Schmidt-2 (5th), B.Ruth (1st), J.Bench-2 (3rd)
