Helluva come back win for Harrisburg against York!

There have been some amazing comebacks so far, you can't count any team out with the offenses in this league.

Scranton Electrics at Harrisburg Senators (Games 7-8)

In two tight ballgames, the Scranton Electrics and Harrisburg Senators would split the two-game set. It was a crazy series though, as in the first game the teams combined for three runs, while in the latter they combined for 26. Just shows you how unpredictable this league can be.

Game 1 - It was one for the ages, and if you had a ticket to this game, you got more than your money's worth. Sandy Koufax took the mound against Satchel Paige, hot off his two-hit complete game shutout and he would dazzle once more...but he would lose. Koufax outdueled him, tossing a complete game allowing just one run on six hits and striking out 12 batters. The lone run came in the 3rd when Barry Bonds hit a solo homer to give the Electrics a 1-0 lead. Paige dominated as well, tossing eight innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out ten. However, one of those hits would be a two-run homer to Mel Ott, which would prove to be the game-winner. HAR 2, SCR 1

SCR 001 000 000 - 1 6 1 (3-4)

HAR 000 002 00X - 2 5 0 (5-2)

Win: Koufax (1-1)

Loss: Paige (1-1)

HR: B.Bonds (5th), M.Ott (4th)

Game 2 - After taking a quick 6-0 lead after an inning and a half, it looked like the Electrics were going to just plow their way to victory. However, the Senators had another idea, they would cut the lead down to as little as 10-8 before the Electrics finally used some late home runs to pull away. The Electrics had 16 hits and also drew 15 walks in the win. SCR 14, HAR 12

SCR 424 000 220 - 15 16 4 (4-4)

HAR 050 003 130 - 12 11 1 (5-3)

Win: Brown (1-1)

Loss: Ryan (1-1)

Save: Maddux (1st)

HR: J.Beckwith (2nd), W.Mays (3rd), M.Ott (5th), W.Stargell (2nd)

Allentown Fleetwings at York White Roses (Games 7-8)

After losing four straight games, the Allentown Fleetwings were looking to get something rolling; and they would. They take both games of the two-game set besting the York White Roses and find themselves now tied for last.

Game 1 - Despite being outhit 12-7, the Fleetwings made the most of their seven hits, as they hit four home runs and accounted for all seven of their runs via the home run to top the White Roses. Lou Gehrig led the way, going 2 for 3 with two home runs, three runs batted in, and a walk on the day. ALL 7, YRK 4

ALL 203 020 000 - 7  7 0 (2-5)

YRK 100 110 010 - 4 12 1 (3-4)

Loss: Marichal (1-1)

Save: Cooper (1st)

HR: R.Hornsby (1st), L.Gehrig-2 (3rd), M.Piazza (4th), M.Mantle (2nd)

Game 2 - It was another great pitching matchup, as there were a plethora of those here in Block 4, with Bob Gibson taking on Vida Blue. However, Bob Gibson would get some late magic after giving up a solo homer to Joe DiMaggio in the 7th which tied the game at one. Lou Gehrig would hit his 3rd home run in just two games, a two-run blast to give the Fleetwings a 3-1 lead. The White Roses rallied in the bottom of the 9th, but could only manage one run as Gibson shut the door. Gibson finished the day with a complete game and 12 strikeouts. ALL 3, YRK 2

ALL 001 000 002 - 3  6 0 (3-5)

Bethlehem Steelers at Lancaster Red Roses (Games 7-8)

The Bethlehem Steelers continued to play some great baseball, putting up ten runs in both games of the two-game set as they sweep the Lancaster Red Roses and move into a tie for first.

Game 1 - Bethlehem trailed 2-0 in the 4th, but would then score 10 unanswered runs as they crushed the Red Roses. Mark McGwire had a great day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Smokey Joe Williams picked up his 1st win of the season, tossing nine innings and striking out seven. BTH 10, LAN 3

BTH 000 340 210 - 10 11 1 (4-3)

LAN 011 000 001 -  3  8 1 (4-3)

Win: Williams (1-1)

Loss: Brown (1-1)

HR: M.McGwire-2 (3rd)

Game 2 - Once again, Lancaster jumped out to the early lead as they led 7-0 heading into the 4th inning. However, Bethlehem would rally, plating a run in the 4th and then scoring six runs in the 5th, the highlight being a three-run homer from Larry Walker. Lancaster would plate two runs in their half of the 5th though, as Mike Schmidt hit a two-run homer, his second of the day as Lancaster led 9-7. In the 6th, Larry Walker was at it again for Bethlehem, this time he drilled a two-run homer to tie the game at 9. An inning later, Mark McGwire would clinch the game-winning hit as he crushed a solo homer to give the Steelers a 10-9 advantage and they were able to hold on for the win. BTH 10, LAN 9

BTH 000 162 100 - 10  8 2 (5-3)

LAN 232 020 000 -  9 15 0 (4-4)

Harrisburg Senators at Lancaster Red Roses (Games 9-10)

The Harrisburg Senators and Lancaster Red Roses were engaged in a classic series, as each of them would come away with a win, and each game was decided by a single run. The Senators maintain their top spot in the standings as well as we reach the halfway point of the 20-game season.

Game 1 - It was a seesaw game thoughout, but ultimately the Lancaster Red Roses would put an end to their two-game skid with an impressive one-run victory over the first place Senators. The Senators were down 2-1 in the 7th when Jeff Kent unloaded on a fastball and took it deep for a two-run blast to give the Senators a 3-2 advantage. An inning later, the Red Roses would plate three runs to take the lead right back as they held on tight for the win. LAN 5, HAR 4

HAR 010 000 201 - 4 8 1 (5-4)

LAN 020 000 03X - 5 5 0 (5-4)

Loss: Foster (2-1)

HR: W.Stargell (3rd), J.Bench (4th), J.Kent (1st)

Injury Report: Babe Ruth (HAR)*

* Since Ruth is a double-carded player both his hitting and pitching cards will go into the injury draft.

Game 2 - After losing a one-run game in yesterday's game, the Senators would manage a series split and win by one-run in today's game. It was another close one, after the Senators took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 9th on a Babe Ruth double, the Sens gave the lead right back in the bottom of the 9th when Mule Suttles hit a game-tying single. However, Johnny Bench would hit his 2nd home run in as many days which proved to be the game-winner for the Senators. HAR 6, LAN 5

Bethlehem Steelers at Allentown Fleetwings (Games 9-10)

After dropping four straight games, the Allentown Fleetings look like they are on the verge of hitting their stride, as they sweep the Bethlehem Steelers and have now won four straight ballgames to move them into a tie for second place.

Game 1 - Homers flew out of the Ballpark at Allentown, as the two teams combined for five home runs, but it would be the hometown Fleetwings who came out on top by a lone run. Lou Gehrig had a solid day at the plate for the Fleetwings, going 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, and a walk with a run scored. Bethlehem used three home runs to account for all of their scoring, but would come just short in their rally in the 9th. ALL 6, BTH 5

BTH 210 000 002 - 5  7 0 (5-4)

ALL 101 200 20X - 6 11 1 (4-5)

Win: Young (1-2)

Loss: Keefe (1-2)

HR: T.Stearnes (3rd), M.McGwire (5th), R.Jackson (2nd), T.Cobb (1st), R.Kiner (3rd)

Game 2 - Ed Walsh tossed nine solid innings for the Fleetwings in the second game of the two-game set, and he would be able to hold on for the win despite serving up four home runs to the Bethlehem Steelers. Bethlehem's Larry Walker took over the KBL home run lead, as he blasted his 7th and 8th home runs of the season, both solo blasts in the losing effort. Ty Cobb led all batters with his 3 for 4 day at the plate for the 'wings. ALL 7, BTH 4

BTH 102 010 000 - 4  6 0 (5-5)

ALL 201 200 11X - 7 11 0 (5-5)

 vs.

York White Roses at Scranton Electrics (Games 9-10)

It was a fairly low scoring series, with the two teams combining for a total of ten runs over the two games, as the York White Roses and Scranton Electrics split the two-game set which completes the first half of the season. York is still stuck in last place, while Scranton is tied for second one game back of the Harrisburg Senators.

Game 1 - Mickey Welch did not strike out a single batter, but he would not need to, as he tossed nine strong innings allowing just one run on six hits to pick up the series opening win. The lone run he gave up was a solo homer to Mickey Mantle in the 3rd, but besides that he held the White Roses at bay. Jeff Bagwell and Barry Bonds each had solo homers for the Electrics. SCR 3, YRK 1

YRK 001 000 000 - 1 6 1 (3-6)

SCR 011 100 00X - 3 6 1 (5-4)

Win: Welch (3-0)

Loss: Alexander (0-3)

HR: M.Mantle (3rd), B.Bonds (6th), J.Bagwell (5th)

Game 2 - The York White Roses saw the ball well in this one, and the stat sheet proved it. Maybe not in the hit or run column, but they did hit four solo home runs to double up the Electrics and earn a series split. The White Roses had just five hits on the day and four of those hits would go over the wall as Rube Waddell had no problem serving up the longballs in this one. YRK 4, SCR 2

YRK 110 100 100 - 4 5 0 (4-6)

SCR 000 020 000 - 2 6 0 (5-5)

Win: Johnson (3-0)

Loss: Waddell (0-3)

HR: M.Mantle (4th), J.Gibson (2nd), H.Greenberg (3rd), A.Belle (2nd)

KBL Midseason Report

KEYSTONE BASEBALL LEAGUE MID-SEASON SUPERLATIVES

A Word From the Commissioner - Brett D.

Well, we are not too far away from wrapping up season one, but it looks like on paper the Scranton Electrics are capable of making a title run. They have the lowest Team ERA and highest Team Batting Average among the six Keystone squads, so hopefully they will be able to keep that up on their title chase.

Larry Walker is searching for the Triple Crown, as he leads the league with eight home runs and is three back in the RBI chase with 16. He will need to boost that average though, as he sits at .349 on the year, not too shabby though.

Hope you guys have enjoyed it so far, I think one of my favorite parts of this entire project to this point is the team names, and the graphics part of it. I really enjoy making cool charts and leaderboards like the one above. It is really simple to make, just whip out excel, play with some cell shading and voila, you have a leaderboard like the one above.

 vs.

York White Roses at Allentown Fleetwings (Games 11-12)

The York White Roses would set a Keystone Baseball League record in this series, but they could not do what was even more important than that, taking two games from the Fleetwings. Allentown and York would split the series as York remains in the cellar. Allentown finishes the season series against York at 3-1.

Game 1 - York could not stop scoring if they tried in this one, plating 20 runs on the Allentown pitching staff in an ugly affair. York had two separate seven-run innings in the 4th and 8th to get the job done. Also, York's Hank Greenberg belted three home runs on the day and drove in six runs. The two teams combined for nine home runs on the day, as Lou Gehrig had two for Allentown in the losing effort. YRK 20, ALL 8

YRK 000 702 272 - 20 21 0 (5-6)

Save: Winters (1st)

HR: H.Greenberg-3 (6th), M.Mantle (5th), A.Belle (3rd), R.Santo (1st), L.Gehrig-2 (7th), R.Kiner (4th)

Game 2 - After getting thumped in the series opener, the Fleetwings would take matters into their own hands as they tripled up the White Roses to earn the series split. Mike Piazza homered and drove in four runs as he collected three hits on the day. Bob Gibson would earn the win, going nine innings allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out seven. ALL 9, YRK 3

YRK 000 001 101 - 3  8 0 (5-7)

Scranton Electrics at Lancaster Red Roses (Games 11-12)

The Lancaster Red Roses and Scranton Electrics would split the two-game set, as they each beat up on each other in each win. They both remain tied for second place, playing .500 ball.

Game 1 - Satchel Paige was once again dominant, as he picked up his second win of the season and lowered his ERA to a whopping 1.07 as he tossed a complete game while allowing just one run on eight hits. Paige looked like he was going to get the shutout, but he gave up a solo blast to Carl Yastrzemski in the bottom of the 9th with two outs. Paige also struck out 11 in the win. SCR 8, LAN 1

SCR 100 032 002 - 8 11 0 (6-5)

Win: Paige (2-1)

Loss: Brown (1-2)

HR: J.Bagwell (6th), C.Yastrzemski (3rd)

Game 2 - The Lancaster Red Roses quickly put yesterday's loss behind them, and I mean very quickly. They would plate 11 runs before the Scranton Electrics even got a run on the board in the 6th inning. Roger Clemens dominated Scranton in this game, going nine innings allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out a new league record 15 batters. Five different Red Roses homered in the big win. LAN 12, SCR 4

SCR 000 001 102 -  4  9 0 (6-6)

Bethlehem Steelers at Harrisburg Senators (Games 11-12)

The Bethlehem Steelers and Harrisburg Senators split the two-game set, as once again both games were pretty one-sided. With one win each both teams retain their positions in the standings, with the Senators still in first, and the Steelers a game behind them.

Game 1 - Harrisburg trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 4th when they finally broke out the bats. They plated six runs in the 4th and never looked back after that as they would cross the plate 12 times on the day. Sandy Koufax dominated as well, he gave up three home runs, but was able to finish the game as he ended the day with 12 strikeouts. Babe Ruth had a solid day too, going 3 for 4 with a double, two homers, and three runs knocked in. HAR 12, BTH 3

BTH 011 100 000 -  3  7 0 (5-6)

HAR 001 601 22X - 12 15 1 (7-4)

Injury Report: R.Jackson (BTH)

Game 2 - Eddie Plank pitched a solid game for the Steelers in the series finale, tossing nine strong innings while holding the Harrisburg offense to just one run on seven hits. Turkey Stearnes, Mark McGwire, and Eddie Mathews combined to go 6 for 14 with a double, four home runs, and all six runs batted in. McGwire led the way with two homers and three runs knocked in. McGwire now has seven home runs in this last six games. BTH 6, HAR 1

I'll run the playoffs, with all six teams making it. The first two rounds being single elimination and then the Keystone Series will be best-of-three. After that I will run down the teams and what they are looking at in the injury draft and then run the draft and it will be onto Season 2 of this project.

There's also a Short but Sweet project on the horizon, probably with either 2010 or 2012. I haven't decided just yet.
