York White Roses at Bethlehem Steelers (Games 13-14)

York finally found a way out of the cellar, as they sweep the two-game set from the Bethlehem Steelers as the standings will change up a bit for the first time since practically Block One. York outscored Bethlehem 18-5 in this series, as it was pretty one-sided.

Game 1 - York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and then added six more in the 6th as they led 8-0. They would go up 13-0 before Bethlehem finally got on the board in a four-run 8th inning which was virtually Pete Alexander's only bad inning. He would go the complete game, allowing five hits and four runs and striking out eight. Ron Santo had a big day from the second lead-off spot for York, he went 5 for 5 with a homer and four runs knocked in. YRK 13, BTH 4

Loss: Keefe (1-3)

HR: M.Mantle (7th), J.Gibson (3rd), R.Santo (3rd), T.Stearnes (5th), J.Morgan (3rd)

Game 2 - Walter Johnson tossed a very good game for the White Roses, going nine innings allowing just one run on five hits and struck out eight batters on his way to picking up his fourth win of the season. Chino Smith got the Steelers on the board first with a three-run homer in the 1st and York never looked back after that. YRK 6, BTH 1

YRK 310 000 001 - 5 6 0 (7-7)

BTH 000 100 000 - 1 5 1 (6-8)

Allentown Fleetwings at Lancaster Red Roses (Games 13-14)

The Allentown Fleetwings and Lancaster Red Roses would split the two-game set, as each team won their respective game in a landslide. The two teams combined for 40 runs in the series, lots of offense in this one.

Game 1 - Lancaster jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after just one inning, and they would never look back as they crushed the Fleetwings in the opener. The two teams combined for six home runs on the day. Oscar Charleston finally got off the snide for Lancaster, as he went 4 for 5 with a double, a homer, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. LAN 13, ALL 7

It was also a huge day for Rogers Hornsby, who clinched the second three-homer day in league history. Harrisburg Senators at Scranton Electrics (Games 13-14)

It was a huge series between the Harrisburg Senators and Scranton Electrics, and finally the Electrics were able to sweep a series, as they take both games from the Senators and move into first place.

Game 1 - Scranton scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 2-0 advantage but Harrisburg would rally in the 5th with three runs. Martin DiHigo hit a two-run blast and Mel Ott followed suit with a solo blast as Harrisburg took a 3-2 advantage. In the 7th, Frank Robinson would have a huge hit as he crushed a three-run homer that proved to be the game-winner. SCR 5, HAR 3

HAR 000 030 000 - 3 8 1 (7-6)

SCR 011 000 30X - 5 7 2 (7-6)

Loss: Foster (2-2)

HR: M.DiHigo (3rd), M.Ott (8th), F.Robinson (2nd)

Injury Report: J.Bagwell (SCR), J.Bench (HAR)

Game 2 - Rube Waddell pitched very well for the Electrics, tossing nine strong innings while only allowing one run on five hits as he would beat out Tom Seaver and the Senators. Seaver pitched well also, but he would allow a few too many hits, and he also gave up two home runs yet struck out ten. Barry Bonds led the way for Scranton, going 2 for 4 with a homer and four runs batted in. SCR 6, HAR 1

HAR 000 010 000 - 1  5 0 (7-7)

York White Roses at Lancaster Red Roses (Games 15-16)

The York White Roses take both games of the two-game set against Lancaster as they have now won four straight ballgames and find themselves in first place in the standings. It was a close series with both games being decided by one run.

Game 1 - York and Lancaster traded single runs in the 2nd inning, but the game would stay knotted at one all the way until the 8th. In the 8th, Hank Greenberg would knock in the game-winning run with a single. Greenberg would knock in both runs for York, going 2 for 4 with a homer and two runs knocked in. Juan Marichal got the win, tossing nine innings allowing one run on four hits and striking out nine. YRK 2, LAN 1

YRK 010 000 010 - 2 8 0 (8-7)

Win: Marichal (3-1)

Loss: Brown (1-3)

HR: H.Greenberg (7th), W.Wells (5th)

Game 2 - Roger Clemens pitched very well for Lancaster in the series finale, but he would not factor into the decision as Leroy Matlock would give up three runs in the top of the 9th to earn himself a loss and a blown save. Vida Blue picked up the win for York, going eight innings allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five. YRK 5, LAN 4

YRK 100 010 003 - 5 11 0 (9-7)

 vs.

Harrisburg Senators at Allentown Fleetwings (Games 15-16)

The Harrisburg Senators slid past the Allentown Fleetwings as they sweep the two-game set. Harrisburg now moves into a tie for first place with York with four games to play.

Game 1 - Allentown got out to the quick 1-0 lead after one inning of play, but after tying the game in the third, Harrisburg would plate four runs in the 4th to take a commanding 5-1 advantage thanks in part to a three-run triple from Duke Snider. Rogers Hornsby hit a three-run homer in the 7th to help the Fleetwings pull within one, but they would fall just short. HAR 5, ALL 4

HAR 001 400 000 - 5 11 0 (8-7)

HR: R.Hornsby (5th)

Game 2 - Duke Snider had a big day for the Senators in the series finale, going 3 for 4 with a triple, a homer, and five runs batted in to lead the way for Harrisburg.  vs.

Bethlehem Steelers at Scranton Electrics (Games 15-16)

The Bethlehem Steelers absolutely dismantled the Scranton Electrics in the two-game set, as they complete the sweep. They would outscore the Scranton Electrics 25-5 in the two-game series.

Game 1 - Smokey Joe Williams tossed a complete game shutout, outdueling his Negro League counterpart Satchel Paige to help the Steelers to an easy win. Williams would strike out ten batters while allowing just four hits on the day. Paige struggled a little, as we are not used to seeing this, he would allow four earned on five hits and striking out seven. BTH 5, SCR 0

BTH 000 021 200 - 5 8 1 (7-8)

SCR 000 000 000 - 0 4 1 (8-7)

Win: Williams (2-2)

Loss: Paige (2-2)

HR: R.Campanella (2nd)

Game 2 - Let's just say this one was ugly all the way around for the Scranton Electrics. They would trail 9-1 after the first inning as Bethlehem really brought the bats in this one. They would plate 20 runs on the day, tying the 20 York put up a couple of games ago. They would smack 25 hits on the day as well. Mark McGwire homered twice and drove in six on the day. BTH 20, SCR 5

BTH 932 104 010 - 20 25 1 (8-8)

SCR 100 130 000 -  5 12 0 (8-8)

Scranton Electrics at Allentown Fleetwings (Games 17-18)

The Allentown Fleetwings and Scranton Electrics split the two-game set, as the Fleetwings could be in danger of clinching a number six seed in the playoffs. The Electrics remain playing .500 ball, as they are looking at a 3, 4 or 5 seed.

Game 1 - Scranton jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but would quickly fall behind as the Fleetwings scored five runs in the bottom of the 2nd and then added two more in the 3rd to take a 7-2 advantage. That would be enough for them to hold on to the win. Sammy Sosa went 2 for 4 with his second homer of the season and drove in four runs. However, in the losing effort for the Electrics, John Beckwith hit for the cycle. He recorded a triple in the 1st, a single in the 2nd, a homer in the 5th, and then finished it off with a double in the top of the 9th. It is the first cycle in league history and I can bet a dollar it won't be the last. ALL 9, SCR 4

SCR 300 010 000 - 4 12 0 (8-9)

ALL 052 000 20X - 9 12 1 (8-9)

Win: Young (2-3)

Loss: Welch (4-1)

HR: J.Beckwith (5th), S.Sosa (2nd)

Game 2 - After getting crushed in the opener, Scranton jumped all over Allentown starter Ed Walsh and they would win by ten runs with a commanding 11-1 victory to earn the series split. Five different players record 2-RBI days and John Beckwith homered for the second straight game after hitting for the cycle in yesterday's contest. Rube Waddell pitched very well, going the distance while allowing one run on seven hits and also striking out seven. SCR 11, ALL 1

SCR 021 010 052 - 11 11 0  (9-9)

ALL 000 100 000 -  1  7 2 (8-10)

Win: Waddell (2-3)

Loss: Walsh (3-1)

Lancaster Red Roses at Bethlehem Steelers (Games 17-18)

After losing two straight games, the Lancaster Red Roses got two back, as they sweep the two-game set from the Steelers and move into a tie for second place at 9-9. Bethlehem falls to 8-10 on the year, as they are staring a 5th or 6th seed in the playoffs right in the face with two games to play.

Game 1 - It was a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 8th when Eddie Mathews came up big with a two-out single to bring home Ted Williams and give the Steelers a 4-3 advantage. However in the top of the 9th, Willie Wells led off the inning with a solo homer to tie the game, his second of the evening. Oscar Charleston would add a two-run single and Tubby Scales would add a two-run home run as the Red Roses would score five in the 9th for the comeback victory. Scales finished the day going 4 for 5 with a double, a homer, and three runs knocked in. LAN 8, BTH 4

Win: Radbourn (4-1)

Loss: Keefe (1-4)

HR: T.Scales (3rd), W.Wells-2 (7th), R.Campanella (3rd)

Game 2 - The Red Roses once again came from behind to top the Steelers in the series finale. Down 4-3 in the in the 6th, Hank Aaron drilled a two-run home run, his 5th of the season to give the Red Roses a 5-4 lead as they would hold on for the win. Christy Mathewson struck out eight in the loss for the Steelers. LAN 5, BTH 4

York White Roses at Harrisburg Senators (Games 17-18)

The top two teams in the standings went at it in the final series of Block 9, and they would both come out on top of the standings when it was all said and done as the York White Roses and Harrisburg Senators split the two-game set.

Game 1 - York brought the lumber in the series opener, as they scored eight runs and smacked 16 hits on the day as they rallied late to top the Senators. It was a 5-5 game in the 8th when Honus Wagner and Josh Gibson both went deep and Albert Belle added a double to give York an 8-5 advantage. Slim Jones pitched a flawless 9th to earn his 2nd save of the season. YRK 8, HAR 5

YRK 210 000 230 - 8 16 0 (10-7)

HAR 012 000 200 - 5  9 1  (9-8)

Win: Alexander (2-3)

Loss: Ruth (0-1)

HR: H.Wagner (2nd), J.Gibson (5th), B.Ruth (4th), W.Stargell (4th)

Game 2 - Tom Seaver and Walter Johnson dueled it out in the series finale, but ultimately it would be Walter Johnson picking up his first loss of the season. Jimmie Foxx played the villain against Johnson, as he belted a three-run homer in the 6th to give the Senators a 3-1 advantage and then crushed another homer, this one a solo blast in the 8th to put the game out of reach for the White Roses. HAR 6, YRK 2

YRK 000 010 001 - 2 6 0 (10-8)

HAR 000 003 12X - 6 6 0 (10-8)

Win: Seaver (2-2)
