AL CENTURY FRANCHISE LEAGUE - OPENING DAY!

Thanks to board member input i have finished final selection of teams and have started the ALsmile.  Have about half the teams in cards so far so will be able to do some C&D games as well.  Have a blog that i will be posting all box scores to based on the home team.  Will post some games here as well.

http://alcenturyfranchiseleague.blogspot.com

Two teams have opened up at home so far - '59 White Sox vs. '95 Mariners in a day game at Comisky Park and '92 Blue Jays vs. '65 Twins indoors in Canada.  Four of the weaker teams in the league i would think.

Randy Johnson dominated the Sox going the distance and striking out 12 in a 6-2 road win. Tino Martinez went deep.  Mariners will have to find a home on D for Edgar Martinez to get his bat in the lineup so he will be a big defensive liability wherever he plays.  The White Sox are pretty weak on offense but with four "1's" up the middle on D we will see how far Defense, Pitching and Speed will take them - not far i am afraiddisbelief!  Here is the boxscore for 1st game of the season!

BLUE JAYS OPEN SEASON WITH 3-2 WIN!

Jays won their home opener with Robbie Alomar getting 3 hits, including the game winner in the 10th, in a 3-2 win. Joe Carter went deep.  I can see Jays have an excess of OF'ers with no DH in play!

Great opening day match up between the '48 Indians and the '30 A's - two powerful teams.

In doing research on the Indians I was blown away by the year Lou Bourdeau had.  Not only did he hit .355/.453/.534 and won the MVP award. He was a SS1, and....what I did not realize, he also led them to the WS title as the MANAGER!!  Wow - don't think anyone could top a year like that!  Lou Bourdeau was the MAN! (Even though he went 0 for 4 in the opener!)

Grove pitches A's past Indians in opener, 6-3

Lou Gehrig ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the '38 New York A Yankees
defeated the '68 Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 5 at Yankee
Stadium.

Gehrig had a great day at the plate. He had the crowd cheering his every
move. He lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 3rd inning,
tripled in the 5th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 7th
inning. Monte Pearson(1-0) got help from Johnny Murphy who pitched great and
earned his 1st save.

Earl Wilson(0-1) was given the loss. He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 5 runs in 2 innings. Gehrig was in a good mood after the game,
'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well now. I made some adjustments
last week and they are paying off. That's what this game is about. making
adjustments as the season goes along.'

In a good matchup it was the '48 Boston Red Sox 9, the '11 Texas Rangers 7 at
Rangers Ballpark.

Bobby Doerr led the offense for '48 Boston. He doubled bringing in two
baserunners in the 3rd inning and belted a three-run homer in the 8th inning.
'11 Texas threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tex Hughson(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Hughson got help
from Denny Galehouse who earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to Alexi
Ogando(0-1) in relief.

'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Ron Washington 'but it's losing the close
ones that really hurt.'
