Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings. '30 Oakland/Phi won it

Simmons then popped a two-run clout over the fence. Jimmy Dykes was up next
and he drew a walk. Bing Miller stepped into the box and drew a walk. '30
Oakland/Phi rapped out 8 hits for the night.

The winning pitcher was Bill Shores(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3

'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some
adjustments,' Simmons said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting
you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'

The '38 New York A Yankees and the '48 Boston Red Sox locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Fenway Park. The final score was the '38 New York A Yankees
3, the '48 Boston Red Sox 2.

'38 New York A had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning. Joe
Dimaggio led off and got things going when he drew a walk. Bill Dickey came
next and he doubled. Tommy Henrich then stroked a one-base hit. Joe Gordon
followed, but he was set down on strikes. '38 New York A and '48 Boston each
finished the night with 8 hits.

Lefty Gomez(2-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Johnny Murphy gained credit for his 5th save. Ellis
Kinder(1-2) took the loss.

'I struggled a bit out there tonight,' Gomez said, 'but I toughed it out and
we got the win.'

The surprise team for me is the Rangers - they are much better than i thought with a crazy HR hitting lineup and good d with the two "1's" on the left side of the infield. Will see if their P holds up.

It seems to me the older teams are at a disadvantage based on the lack of good arms in the pen. The modern teams with the specialty bullpens can just match up better late in games - even though the starters are good and can go deep in games on the older teams it seems it does not make up for a weak pen. We will see in the long run how this plays out. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

What pitcher fatigue setting are you using?WHn playing older teams I tend to drop to advanced fatigue because you must use starters as relievers. With other settings they are fatigued entering the game. i give the old guys the benefit of the doubt because that is how it really went. Their real stats stats were based on those between start relief appearances so having them fatigued makes them worse then real life.

Older teams definitely need the starters to go longer. Holding the roster to 25 mitigates the advantage. The other thing modern teams can't do is platoon because they have so many guys down in the bullpen.

So much for the fast start by the Red Sox.

All close races with nothing too surprising.

Joe Dobson hot pitcher for the Red Sox with 5 wins - Ted Williams not hitting much yet either.  Surprised the A's have not done better - but of course it is early.  Michael Young and Roberto Alomar has been on fire to help their teams do well.  Orioles have gotten hot after slow start.

'69 Orioles Waiting For "Luck" to Change!

Earl Weaver was asked by a reporter after yesterday's 14 inning loss to the Blue Jays "When is the teams luck going to change?"

Earl responded in typical Earl fashion and said "When we start hitting the damn ball".  Earl knows something is amiss as after 32 games the Birds are 14-18 with a 1-4 record in extra innings and a 4-7 record in 1 run games.

The pitching certainly can't be blamed as the O's have the lowest ERA in the American League at 3.13.  Unfortunately they are also 3rd from the bottom in batting average at .233 but their runs scored per game is not that terrible at 4.19.

As of this date if you take their runs scored(134) and runs allowed(118) and apply the formula for winning percentage based on this differential the Orioles should be 18-14 and 1/2 game out if first place instead of in the basement of the Eastern Division.

This is where statistics do lie a bit. The problem is they have had quite a few blowout wins - scoring 12 runs once, 11 runs once, 9 runs three times and 8 runs twice. But alas they have scored 2 runs or less in a whopping 44% of their games!  They have been shut out 5 times, tops in the league.  I guess you could say when they hit they hit but when they don't they don't - there is no in between with this team!

The Birds two top relievers Eddie Watt and Dick Hall are a combined 0-7! Watt has a respectable ERA of 2.41 so in his case it is more a testament to the Orioles issues with scoring runs late in games.

We know it's early in the season but our best advice for the team - listen to Earl and start hitting the damn ball - especially late in games!
