1960-70 College Football Tournament (Bowl Bound and Haffner)

I’m considering re-starting my 1960-1970 College Football Tournament.  I started with 32 teams using both Bowl Bound (Sports Illustrated’s foray into the college football board game market back in the 1970s) and Haffner (an early computer sports game that started in the 1980s).  Strat-O-Matic is not included because they never created more than three teams from that era.  I considered including Action PC, but I missed their sale by a day and eventually lost interest.

In Round II, where I am currently, I’ve narrowed the field to eight teams for each game platform.  Each team will play the other teams in its division, and the division winners will play one game to decide the champion of the 1960s.  I’ve already played week one.  My money is on Notre Dame 1966.

I went ahead and played week two of Haffner (much easier, since the computer does all the work).

I'm afraid Washington and Syracuse are out of the running at 0-2.  I think everyone else still has a shot.  Washington played statistically even with Wisconsin, but they committed six costly turnovers.  Texas had numerous opportunities to defeat Mississippi, but they choked each time.  Also, I was surprised that Notre Dame lost by such a wide margin.  (I think both Washington and Notre Dame will fare better in Bowl Bound.  We'll see.)

HAFFNER

East                W    L    T    PF    PA    Round I
Georgia 1968        1    0    1    34    19     3-0-0
Penn State 1969     1    0    1    37    13     2-1-0
Notre Dame 1966     1    1    0    38    41     2-1-0
Syracuse 1966       0    2    0    20    56     3-0-0

West                W    L    T    PF    PA    Round I
Mississippi 1961    2    0    0    47    34     3-0-0
Wisconsin 1962      1    1    0    26    25     3-0-0
Texas 1969          1    1    0    45    31     2-1-0
Washington 1960     0    2    0    14    41     2-1-0

Week Two Scores

Georgia 1968      27
Notre Dame 1966   12

Penn State 1969   30
Syracuse 1966      6

Washington 1960    0
Wisconsin 1962    21

Mississippi 1961  26
Texas 1969        20

Scheduled Games - Final Week

Georgia 1968 vs Syracuse 1966
Notre Dame 1966 vs Penn State 1969
Washington 1960 vs Texas 1969
Wisconsin 1962 vs Mississippi 1961

Notre Dame 1966 is much more dominant in Bowl Bound.  They handily defeated Georgia 1968 (to whom they lost in Haffner by 12) 36-6.  The final team stats are attached.  Total yards were pretty close.  Turnovers and penalties really hurt Georgia (though not enough to have made a big difference in the outcome).

I'm still working on finishing up Bowl Bound, but the final results for Haffner are in.  The 1968 Georgia Bulldogs (5-0-1 overall) will take on the 1961 Ole Miss Runnin' Rebels (6-0-0 overall) for the 1960s championship.  They'll play one game and use modern college football overtime if there is a tie.

Georgia 1968        2    0    1    46    25     3-0-0
Notre Dame 1966     2    1    0    57    41     2-1-0
Penn State 1969     1    1    1    37    32     2-1-0
Syracuse 1966       0    3    0    26    68     3-0-0

I love Lance Haffner football. Alas, I have no dinosaurs on which to play it.

Hey, where are the BUCKEYES? I see no Buckeyes!  confuse

The version of Haffner I have plays directly on Windows 32-bit or via "DOSBox" on Windows 64-bit.  I have a 64-bit at home and a 32-bit at work.  Since DOSBox is a bit of a chore to set up, I run Haffner at work and watch the games while I work on something else that isn't too challenging.

The 1968 Buckeyes were in Round I in both games (I used the same teams for both tournaments).  They were 2-1-0 in Haffner (just missing the cut for Round II) and were 1-2-0 in Bowl Bound.  They defeated Michigan 1969 15-0 in Haffner, but lost a wild 48-42 heartbreaker to the Wolverines in Bowl Bound.

The 1968 Buckeyes were a great team in real life, but they don't seem to translate well to football strategy games.  In my SOM "replays", they are 13-27-1 all-time against other great OSU teams and other top teams from the past 50 years.

If I decide to do another Haffner and Bowl Bound project, it would encompass 1945-1959 and include the 1954 Buckeyes.

In Bowl Bound, Notre Dame and Georgia switch positions, and Notre Dame (much more dominant in Bowl Bound) will play in the championship game against the Washington Huskies.  It should be a good one.  Though there's one game to play for each team in the West, the 2-0-0 Huskies already have the division clinched.

I think the Huskies were looking past Oklahoma to their championship match-up with Notre Dame.

Irish Defeat Huskies for Bowl Bound 1960s Title

I really thought this one would go to overtime.  Washington seemed to have the upper-hand for a good portion of the game (especially in the first half).  Notre Dame was frequently pinned deep in their territory, but the Huskies managed to score only once against a strong Irish defense.  Early in the game, Notre Dame stopped the Huskies at the two yard-line, and a 15-yard penalty took a field goal off the board.  Should have gone for it.

Georgia defeated Ole Miss in a close one, 31-29.  I lost the box score (Haffner is very unforgiving with errors in stat viewing and compilation), but it appeared to me as though Ole Miss had the statistical edge.  They uncharacteristically passed a lot (for about 275 yards), but they had to.  They were trailing the entire game and were down 31-14 in the fourth quarter.
