It's that time of year again! In game one of two (at The Big House in Ann Arbor), it's scoreless after the first quarter. As might be expected, it's been a battle of field position, with Michigan starting to gain the edge. They have the ball, first and 10, at their own 46.

At the half, more of the same. Neither team came very close to scoring. Blair Conway missed two long field goal attempts for the Buckeyes. Gil Chapman coughed up the ball on the Buckeye 40 with 1:15 left in the half. That's as close as either team got.

So far, Archie Griffin has 64 yards on 21 carries for Ohio State. Chapman is the leading ground-gainer for Michigan with 38 yards on 7 carries.

Michigan takes the opening kick-off and marches 66 yards for the score. Ed Shuttlesworth rushed for 53 yards on the drive, including the final four to paydirt. Michigan leads 7-0.

After an Ohio State field goal made it 7-3, Michigan again ran with impunity against the Buckeyes. But at the Ohio State 22, Ed Shuttlesworth (94 yards on 17 carries) fumbled the ball away. Ohio State then drove 70 yards for a touchdown without a single pass attempt. Archie Griffin (124 yards on 28 carries) scored the go-ahead points on a 12-yard run. After three quarters, Ohio State leads 10-7.

Oh my. When it rains, it pours. At the Michigan 49, it was Ohio State's turn to drop the pigskin. But this time it bounced right back into fullback Pete Johnson's hands and he ran the distance for the score. Buckeyes lead 17-7 with 8:43 left. This one might be over. Dennis Franklin (1 of 9 for 20 yards) will have to put the ball in the air a lot against a tough Buckeye secondary to pull this one out.

After some fine passing by Franklin, including a 31 yarder to split end Clint Haslerig, Michigan's drive stalls at the Buckeye 13. But Mike Lantry connects on the field goal to make it 17-10 with 5:26 left.

1:22 remaining in the game. Michigan first and 10 at the Buckeye 27 with two timeouts left. They must score a touchdown.

Franklin sacked for a 7-yard loss by Van DeCree. Second and 17. Michigan calls a timeout. 1:15 left.

A two-yard scramble by Franklin and a 10-yard pass to Haslerig . . . fourth and five . . . no timeout taken . . . Michigan goes hurry-up . . . Franklin drops back to pass . . . Pete Cusick pushes past the center and sacks Franklin! Buckeyes take over on downs!

Cornie Greene takes a knee and the Buckeyes win 17-10. Whoa, Nellie. Great fun.

Ohio State has won three in a row and leads the series 7-4.  The action now shifts to The Shoe for game two of this year's series.

The Buckeyes attempted 4 passes in the entire game!?! I wonder what Woody Hayes would think of College Football today?

In 1973, Cornie Greene attempted 46 passes in 11 games. In the actual game against Michigan, he did not attempt a single pass.

Not long thereafter, Hayes recruited Art Schlichter. In 1978 (Hayes' last year), Schlichter, a freshman, attempted 175 passes. I think Hayes recognized the importance of the passing game (albeit a bit late), but he never had the opportunity to fully implement it.

Had Hayes coached in the 1980s, you might have seen a much different OSU offensive attack than they had in the 1970s.

The second game of the two-game series is underway. A Neal Colzie interception of a Dennis Franklin pass leads to an early score by the Buckeyes. Archie Griffin busts off-tackle for two yards to make it 6-0. The extra point is good and Ohio State leads 7-0.

After several exchanges of punts, the Buckeyes put together a 59-yard drive (all rushing) to take a 14-0 lead. Michigan's offense better start putting some points on the board.
