Pedro Vs Maddux
Permalink

Easily the two most decorated pitchers of the steroid era, and two of the best of all time.  While acrolling through some numbers I started debating in my head which player was better.  The Mets side of me says Pedro easily.  With years of frustration going against Maddux you have to respect him but he's a brave lol.

Case for Maddux:

The "Mad Dog" played 23 seasons in the Major Leauges, compiling 355 wins to 227 losses with a 3.16 Lifetime era. From 1992 to 1995 Maddux won 4 straight Cy Young Awards, and from 92-00 he finished outside the top 5 only once. During that 4 year stretch Maddux's era was 2.18, 2.36, 1.56, 1.63. Maddux is a two time 20 game winner, but was the model for consistency winning 15 games 18 times , and 17 seasons in a row.  An 8x all star Maddux was also possibly the best fielding pitcher ever winning 18 gold gloves.  The Braves in the 90's were known for, winning the NL East, and their great starting pitching.  Maddux  was their best, he helped lead them to the 95' World Series title, and 3 National Leauge Championships.

Case for Pedro:

Pedro is one of the more polarizing ball players of the last 25 years.  Love him or hate him everyone felt some type of way about Pedro.  Martinez played 18 seasons in the bigs.  Pedro had a 219-100 career record with a 2.93 era.  Playing for Boston , in the dreaded AL East, for most of his prime in Pedro had a 117-32 record with a 2.52 era over his 7 Seasons there.  From 97-2000 he won 3-4 Cy Youngs, finishing second once. An 8 time all star Martinez has 2 top 5 finishes in MVP voting.  Martinez has 2 300 strikeout seasons to his credit, and in 99' he finished with 100 more strikeouts than innings pitched. Pedro won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2004 the year the Sox had the amazing comeback in the ALCS, and he was a part of the 09' Phillies team that won the National Leauge pennant.

On the surface these 2 couldn't be more different.  The serious Maddux vs the laughing joking Pedro.  Maddux beat you with percision while Pedro could over power you.  A lot of times you hear people call pitchers artist, these 2 were in every sense of the word.   Looking at the W/L record is a little misleading because of Pedro's injury history and Maddux playing 5 more seasons.  These guys were 1/1a for most of the 90s.  So I ask who do you got Pedro or Maddux ?

If I am drafting with hindsight I take Maddux.

Pedro 2827.1 IP
Maddux 5000.1 IP

That is such a different it makes it easy IMO.

I am biased, but I saw Maddux pitch so many times in RL, and he never seemed to be blowing the Phillies away but after 7 innings, we would have a few hits, maybe a walk and maybe a run or two.  Very consistent every time out.

Pedro's last team was the Phillies in 2009.  And even though he was a shell of himself, he was arguably the Phils second best starter that season.  (Hamels was off that season, possibly a carry over from overuse in 2008.)

Still, it would be Maddux for me.

It's funny how he can be so accurate pitching, but can't hit Mitch Williams with a helmet 2 feet away.

I get the consistency factor and all. I just always felt Pedro at his peak is the best I've ever seen. the way he dominated on the mound only a few guys could compare to. Maddux being one of them
