Mike Krukow blasted a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Chicago Cubs topped the New
York Mets by a score of 5 to 2 at Shea Stadium.

Krukow was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He laced a one-base hit which brought
home a run in the 3rd inning, laced a base-hit in the 4th inning and clubbed
a three-run home run in the 6th inning. Chicago had 11 hits for the game and
New York had 8.

Krukow(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Krukow got help from Bruce Sutter who was credited with his
1st save. Tom Hausman(0-1) was given the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk
in 5 innings.

Montreal cam up big in this game - Bill Lee was in trouble every inning, but Phil failed to come thru in the clutch.  Bob Boone getting thrown out at the plate (by Valentine0 in the second inning looks like was costly as well . Phils also had runners in scoring position in the 1st, 3rd,4th, and 5th innings and failed to come through . In the ninth with McBride aboard with a single - Moreland ph for Maddox and launched a ball to LF that Cromarite hauled in at the base of the wall - then Schmidt struck out - was that kind of game for Phil

The San Diego Padres nipped the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings 6 to 5 at

Jack Murphy Stadium in a hard fought contest.

Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings.  San Diego ended up

winning it in the 10th inning.  Gene Richards laced a one-base hit.  Jerry

Coleman then called for a steal which was successful.  After an out was

recorded, Jerry Turner then ripped a base-hit giving San Diego the victory as

17,845 happy fans celebrated wildly.  San Diego rapped out 11 hits for the

night.

Bob Shirley(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Ed

Halicki(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He was pinned with the loss

despite not allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work

Yes - with those Phillies - I am hoping they don't fall to far behind - it will nice to have them close enough to think they have a chance against the Expos

I actually will not at all be surprised if they miss the post season. While the real nostalgia of the first franchise World Series win is fun for the memories, they are a flawed team and a team that was on the decline if you look at the late 70s teams they fielded.
