The upset-minded Tigers came oh so close.  They had the tying run at third in the ninth with one out, but could not move the runner the final 90 feet.  Reggie Smith had a pair of homers and all three RBIs for Boston.  Detroit's Bill Freehan helped keep the game close, throwing out all five of the Red Sox who tried to steal second on him.

The Red Sox finish intra-division play 5-0, the only team to do so.  The Tigers are 0-5, joining the Pirates and Angels in the winless club.

I initially was uncertain whether I would play a round of inter-division games, but I'm having such a blast with the game that I've have decided to press forward with another three games for each team.  I'll then decide whether I want to play three or even five more.

Oh-for-five. Ouch! Tough to win with that many outs on the bases.

With three games to play and Cincinnati trailing the NL West-leading Dodgers by two games, the Big Red Machine needed a win against the 4-1 Mets to stay in contention.  And they got it.  Jim Merritt scattered nine hits and got some key double plays from his defense to even his record at 1-1.  Tony ("Big Dog") Perez continued his hitting rampage, going 3 for 5 with a homerun (his second).  Johnny Bench also went yard for the Reds.

Next up, the White Sox try to snap the Red Sox's win streak at Fenway.  Jerry Janeski (0-1, 6.75 ERA) pitches for the White Sox while Sonny Siebert (0-0, 3.60 ERA) hurls for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox spotted the White Sox four runs in the first, but nevertheless ended up with a seemingly effortless 7-5 win at Fenway.  Rico Petrocelli and George Scott picked up three hits apiece for Boston, while Gail Hopkins went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and a homerun for Chicago.  Sparky Lyle and Vicente Romo tossed three shutout innings to seal the deal for the Red Sox, who are now 6-0 and making things tough on the second place Orioles (4-1), which play the 1-4 Athletics next.

"Hey, your shoe's untied!"

Diego Segui gets the unenviable task of facing Jim Palmer and the 4-1 Orioles.  It's Segui's first start (though he appeared once in relief during intra-division play).  Palmer one-hit the Tigers in his last outing.  The Orioles, who have yet to use a relief pitcher, have a team ERA of 0.61.

Neither Segui nor Palmer made it past the fifth inning, but it was errors (three, to be exact) that did in Diego and the A's.

Don Buford and Paul Blair reached base six times and scored five of the Orioles' runs.  Blair also knocked in three, and Buford picked two stolen bases to take over the league lead with six.  Frank Robinson added two RBIs to his league-leading total.  He now has 11.

Five players had two hits for Oakland.  They out-hit Baltimore big time, and would have won had it not been for the miscues.

Next up, the Astros (1-4) take on the Expos (3-2).  Likely starters are Steve Renko (1-0, 9.39 ERA) and Don Wilson (0-1, 2.70 ERA).

Don-Wilson.jpg?id=4c84fee5-299d-43f3-8ec70-293Fr.jpgrusty-staub-1970.jpg

Don Wilson has his work cut out for his start against Montreal.  Bob Bailey and Rusty ("Le Grande Orange") Staub are a big reason why the Expos are just a game off the pace in the NL East.  Bailey is hitting .333 with a league-leading 4 homeruns 10 RBIs.  Staub is batting .368 with 3 dingers, second in the NL to Bailey.  But the Expos starting pitchers have no complete games and have had to rely heavily on the relief corps so far.  (Claude Raymond has appeared in all five games and has saved two of the wins.)  I think the Astros might have the edge in this one.  Go get'em Donny Boy.

I remember when the news broke that Wilson committed suicide. Tragic thing. Fine pitcher, and very underrated. The 'Stros had a lot of guys who never got their props.

Been following and enjoying your project as I have fallen a little behind in mine. Extra Innings free preview tends to do that. But I do love this time of year; NCAA tourney wrapping up, NBA and NHL seasons heading to the playoffs, and Opening Day. Good times.

Back to the tabletop...

Thanks for checking it out. I see it as something of an appendix to your project. The hair might not have been as big and it was a transition year for the plastic stuff, but it was, after all, the beginning of the decade.

My project has slowed a bit, as well, because I've determined that I need to check all of the charts for accuracy. I've found enough input mistakes in the computer version to warrant a full review. But who's in a hurry?

I always thought (based on initial reports) that Wilson's death was accidental. That seems to have been the official verdict. But reading up on the circumstances of Wilson's death indicates suicide was likely (though not certain).

I think the family contends it was accidental, but given the immensity of the tragedy I'm not surprised they would prefer to think otherwise.

Rain delay in the sixth at Jarry Park with the Expos leading the Astros 8-6. Both Wilson and Renko have been knocked out of the box.

The rain stopped and the sky cleared, but the Expos wish they hadn't.  The Astros exploded for six runs in the eighth, sending 11 hitters to the plate.  The big gun for Houston was Cesar Cedeno, who went 4 for 5 with 4 RBIs, 3 runs scored and a homerun.  Both teams combined for 33 hits.

The Astros, who overcame four errors, are now 2-4, 2.5 games off the pace.  The Expos fall to 3-3.  They are in fourth place, 1.5 games out.

Next up, the 0-5 California Angels take on the 2-3 Indians.  The likely starters are, respectively, Rudy May (0-1. 3.00) and Steve Hargan (0-0, 6.14).
