NHL Prepares for First Big Night of Season

NEW YORK - The National Hockey League is preparing for it's first big night of the year since Opening Night as all three of the leagues undefeated and untied teams will be in action on the fifth day of the regular season.

nhl-vanbiesbrouck.jpgThe Atlantic Division leading Philadelphia Flyers highlight the night as they face the Phoenix Coyotes at The Spectrum. The Flyers have posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season and are the only team to not have allowed a goal this year.

The Flyers division rivals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, host the Buffalo Sabres as they look to keep pace in the Atlantic. The Flyers and Lightning are tied for first place with four points.

In the Western Conference, the Edmonton Oilers have the toughest battle as they host the Colorado Avalanche in a battle for first place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers are the highest scoring team in the league with eight goals in two games and have only allowed one goal.

Doug Weight is coming off the first hat trick of the season in the NHL and has a league-leading four goals in the Oilers wins over the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks.

Weight scored the Oilers final goal against Detroit and then rattled off three consecutive goals in a 4-1 win over the Sharks in San Jose. Goalkeeper Curtis Joseph has a 4-0 shutout over the Red Wings to his credit and will go for his third win of the season.

I have to admit I stopped following hockey back in the early '90's (and wasn't that attached even then), but I recognized the name "Rheaume" in your Blues-Stars recap.

Pascal Rheaume is the younger brother of Manon, the first woman to ever suit up for an NHL team.  I still have one of her hockey cards in my collection.

Did you know that a movie based on her life story is/was "in the works," as they say?

http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/manon-rheaumes-life-story-set-to-hit-the-big-screen/

http://www.betweenthepipesmovie.com/#!photos/cuxt

I don't have any more than that, so I don't know what the current status is, or if the project was completed.

Hi! Thanks for following... I did not know about the movie, but I was able to see her play when the Atlanta Knights played...it was prior to the Thrashers becoming an NHL team...there was a lot of press surrounding her, but as far as NHL caliber talent she wasn't par, but she was a very good goaltender.

It's all relative.  When we were kids, playing street hockey with our buddies, we could maybe dream of being as good as she was.

We get too enamored of the biggest stars, and lose sight of how good everyone at that level really is.  Same with all sports.  Who wouldn't have their eyes glaze over after watching the Babe take a few cuts?

Realistically, though, even Ben Paschal was probably light-years better than I could have ever been.
