At Royals Stadium, the Kansas City faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel.  Todd Stottlemyre(2-0) finally bested his Kansas City
counterpart, Bret Saberhagen(0-1), by the score of 2 to 0.
 
Kansas City was unable to climb back into it after Toronto went ahead for good
in the top of the 5th inning plating an isolated run.  Toronto had only 6
hits for the afternoon.  
 
Duane Ward got the save, his 1st.  Saberhagen was given the loss.  He
surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Craig Worthington went deep as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Detroit
Tigers by the score of 4 to 1 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Baltimore jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning scoring a single run using 2
hits.  Baltimore ended up with 10 hits for the game while Detroit had 7.
 
The win was credited to Dave Johnson(1-0) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run.
Gregg Olson earned his 1st save.  Kevin Ritz(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He
struggled with his control issuing 5 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Melido Perez came through with a solid 7 innings as the Chicago White Sox
defeated the Cleveland Indians by the score of 5 to 1 at Comiskey
Park.
 
Cleveland was unable to claim the lead after Chicago went ahead in the 3rd
inning plating one baserunner utilizing 3 base hits.  Ozzie Guillen tripled.
Two outs later Ivan Calderon stepped in and he doubled.  Ron Kittle then
slapped a one-base hit.  Carlton Fisk was up next and he drew a walk to load
the bases.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  Chicago finished with
10 hits while Cleveland ended up with 2.  
 
The victory went to Perez(1-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Greg
Swindell(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 6
innings.

Roger Clemens pitched a 3 hitter at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox beat the
Milwaukee Brewers by the count of 6 to 1.
 
Milwaukee never recovered after Boston took the lead in the bottom of the 5th
inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.  Ellis Burks got things going when he doubled.
After an out was recorded, Billy Jo Robidoux came up and he laced a single.
Tony Pena was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Luis Rivera followed
and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Kevin Romine came up to bat and hit a
single.  Boston banged out 7 hits on the afternoon.  
 
Clemens(1-1) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Chris Bosio(1-1)
was charged with the loss.  He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3
innings.  
 
'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a
good groove.' Clemens said after the game.  'I'm ready to start another game
tomorrow!'

Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 7 to 4 at Royals Stadium.
 
Kansas City came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had
4 base hits.  It was enough scoring to earn the victory.  Kansas City had 12
hits for the game and Toronto had 8.  
 
Mark Davis(1-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jeff
Montgomery recorded his 3rd save.  Jim Acker(0-1) suffered the loss in
relief.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 4 hits and no walks.

21,880 fans were treated to a fine game at Tiger Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Baltimore Orioles won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.
 
Detroit was unable to recover after Baltimore went ahead in the top of the 7th
inning scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits.  Detroit threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.  
 
Bob Milacki(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 6
runs. Gregg Olson preserved the game for Milacki, recording his his 2nd save.
Mike Henneman(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.

One run was the difference at Comiskey Park as the Chicago White Sox defeated
the Cleveland Indians in 15 innings 5 to 4.
 
Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings.  Chicago came out the
victor in the 15th inning.  Robin Ventura led off and started the rally when
he laced a base-hit.  Lance Johnson stepped up next and he ripped a
base-knock.  After an out was recorded, Dave Gallagher came to the plate and
ripped a one-base hit.  Gallagher took second on the throw.  After another
out, Ivan Calderon came to bat and smacked a single.  Chicago managed 13 hits
in their victory.  
 
Donn Pall(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning.
The loss was charged to Al Nipper(0-1) in relief.  He pitched 1 and 2/3
innings allowing 4 hits and no walks.

Kevin Tapani retired 11 batters on strikeouts as the Minnesota Twins bested
the California Angels 7 to 3 at Anaheim Stadium.
 
Tapani(1-0) was very good in the win.  He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 1
walk in 8 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 11.25 to 4.97.  Minnesota
finished with 9 hits while California ended up with 6.  
 
Tapani was helped out by Juan Berenguer who recorded his 1st save.  Chuck
Finley(0-2) took the loss.  'He was really impressive today,' Finley said of
his counterpart.  'Our guys were just swinging at air.'

Kingdome.  The Oakland Athletics scored scored 3 runs for the
victory.
 
Oakland delivered all the runs required in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
base hits.  After an out was recorded, Carney Lansford started the attack as
he doubled.  Jose Canseco came next and he slapped a single.  Mark McGwire
then cracked a two-run shot.  Oakland out-hit Seattle for the game, 8 hits to
3.  
 
Dennis Eckersley got the save, his 3rd.  Bill Swift(0-1) was tagged with the
loss in relief.  He was knocked around, surrendering 3 runs in 2 innings.

Jesse Barfield lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 5 RBI as the New York
Yankees defeated the Texas Texans by a score of 10 to 1 at Yankee
Stadium.
 
Barfield had a good day at the plate.  He doubled clearing all three ducks off
the pond in the 3rd inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 7th inning.
Texas was out-hit by New York, 10 hits to 7.  
 
Greg Cadaret(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Charlie Hough(0-2)
ended up with the loss.  He was unable to control the New York offense and
allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
