Those games can be fun.  I think the lesser teams were included and the rules constructed so that there would be realistic blowouts for the better teams.  Here's a 1988 replay (more of a tournament) started by SOM but apparently not completed.  http://www.strat-o-matic.com/community/glenn-guzzo-column/guzzo-archive/memories-part-1 (Part One - there's a Part Two, perhaps Three, in the archives)

Instead of a full season, you could do a series of mini-tournaments with the winners advancing.  I've done that on occasion.  With the Ivy League, they would play each other once and the winner would advance to round two.  Other conferences might not have multiples of four, which can create some first round problems.

Last year I did a single elimination tournament with the set. Clemson ended up upsetting The U in the semi finals and lost in the championship game to Oklahoma.

I'd like to see a summary of that, even if it's just the scores.

Though I played only a portion of two games (I have the 1986 and 1988 sets), I think the construction of the game is better than the modern computer version.  I wish the 1986-88 sets were computerized, as I don't have the patience and concentration the C&D game requires.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

(14) 4707.gif at (1) 4679.gif

First Quarter

Clemson receives the kickoff to begin the game and drive to near midfield in 5 plays before being forced to punt. Oklahoma goes 3 and out and Donnell Woolford brings the punt back to the OU 23. The Tigers don't get a first down and David Treadwell boots a 34 yard field goal to give them the lead, 3-0. Runs by Jamelle Holieway and Anthony Stafford get the Sooners into Clemson territory but from there the Tigers' defense stiffens and Oklahoma is forced to punt. Clemson goes 3 and out then the Sooners drive 20 yards in 5 plays but R.D.Lashar misses a 37 yard field goal try. The Tigers again go 3 and out then runs by Holieway and fullback Lydell Carr puts Oklahoma again into Clemson territory as the first quarter ends.

Clemson 3, Oklahoma 0

Second Quarter

Oklahoma's drive stalls four plays later on the Clemson 16 and Lashar kicks the 33 yard field goal through the uprights to tie the game at 3-3. Clemson goes 3 and out then the Sooners are on the march again as the 12 play, 60 yard drive stalls inside the Clemson 10 and Lashar's 24 yard field goal gives Oklahoma the lead, 6-3, with just over 6:00 remaining in the first half. The Tigers punt following a short drive then with under 4:00 to go, the Sooners drive 29 yards in 8 plays and Lashar drills a 26 yard field goal to give them a 9-3 lead as time expires.

Oklahoma 9, Clemson 3

Third Quarter

Oklahoma takes the second half kickoff and marchs 64 yards in 12 plays with Stafford capping the drive with a 3 yard burst off tackle into the end zone as the Sooners take a 16-3 lead with 10:15 remaining. Clemson is forced to punt after a short drive and Bernard Hall brings the punt back to the Clemson 47. From there it takes Oklahoma 6 plays to hit paydirt again with Stafford going in from a yard out to increase the lead to 23-3 as the rout is on. On the second play of the ensuing drive, the Sooners intercept a pass by Rodney Williams and end up settling for a 44 yard field goal by Lashar after not getting a first down to make it a 26-3 game. The Tigers go 3 and out and the quarter ends as Oklahoma begins their series.

Oklahoma 26, Clemson 3

Fourth Quarter

Oklahoma drives to inside Clemson territory before having to punt then the Tigers mount a short drive to just past their 40 before punting. The Sooners strike again, this time driving 63 yards, 26 of it on a pass from Holieway to Keith Jackson, in 8 plays with Stafford going in from a yard out for his third touchdown of the game as the lead builds to 32-3 with 6:30 remaining in the game. A pass by Williams is again picked off by the Sooners and returned to the 9. Three plays later, a field goal by Lashar tacks on 3 more points and a 35-3 Oklahoma lead with 3:30 left. Clemson is finally able to mount a long drive but they turn the ball over on downs with 15 seconds on the clock and backup quarterback Charles Thompson takes a knee to mercifully bring this game to an end.

I like that a not-so-good Buckeye squad defeated Arizona State then apparently took top-ranked Miami down to the wire.
