1990 - SHORT BUT SWEET

After just finishing up my last 'Short but Sweet' season yesterday, it is time to move onto the next one and start a new one up. I have completed 1911, 1927, 1959, 1966, 1969, 2003, 2014, and 2015 so far in this mini-season format and now we travel 21 years into the future from 1969 as I bring you "1990 - Short but Sweet". The following will be what the project is about.

"1990 - Short but Sweet" will consist of eight teams (4 AL, 4 NL). Each team will play their respective league mates 14 times in alternating three and four-game series for a total of 42 games. Thank you to Bill (C&D Man) for the inspiration of the 42-game mini-season. 42 games for each team should give me a decent bench mark to see how the teams perform. Meanwhile, it will not take too long to complete as my last couple projects have taken about a month to roll out. Although my time will be limited with work. baseball, vacation, and school starting soon as well, I will try to roll as many games as I can. Here are some particulars:

  • This project will be done in Strat Basic C&D with a few of my modifications.
  • These modifications include and are not limited to my chart on when runners are able to steal and my chart on when to remove a starting pitcher. Although, I will usually rely on POW unless a pitcher is tossing a shutout or no-hitter (Any questions, do ask).
  • I will be using the Super Advanced Solitaire Rest Chart to monitor usage. The rest chart will be used every third game for three-game series and every fourth game for four-game series. This will allow some of the bench players to get their feet wet. Usage will be capped at about 40% of actual usage.
  • Rosters will feature 20 players (12 position players, 8 pitchers) with four-man rotations. Because of the short project length, I decided to go with the smaller rosters.
  • After the 42 games are complete, the top team from the American League and the top team from the National League will advance to the best-of-seven World Series where they will be crowned 1990 - Short but Sweet champion.
  • I am going to try to stick to real-life lineups but will sometimes use my own just for the fun of it. I like to mess around and switch things up.

I am not very familiar with this set at all, I received it I think three Christmases ago so I don't really have much knowledge. I wasn't born until 1994 so this set is still before my time, although I know some of the bigger names such as Barry Bonds, Doug Drabek, Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco, Cecil Fielder, etc. What a year this was by Roger Clemens, I am really excited to use his card and see what kind of numbers he can put up. Hopefully the Pirates can beat the Reds like they should have in real life and make it to the World Series.

The teams I chose in this project are not the top four in each league, although usually they are. I had to go with the Expos in the NL because I have heard so much about them and I want to see if they can play spoiler at least a little bit and maybe even make some noise. Here are the eight teams that will be competing in "1990 - Short but Sweet".

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Oakland Athletics (103-59)
Chicago White Sox (94-68)
Boston Red Sox (88-74)
Toronto Blue Jays (86-76)

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pittsburgh Pirates (95-67)
Cincinnati Reds (91-71)
New York Mets (91-71)
Montreal Expos (85-77)

PREVIOUS WINNERS
1911 - Philadelphia Athletics over New York Giants 4 games to 1
1927 - New York Yankees over Pittsburgh Pirates 4 games to 2
1959 - Los Angeles Dodgers over Chicago White Sox 4 games to 1
1966 - San Francisco Giants over Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3
1969 - Baltimore Orioles over New York Mets 4 games to 3
1977 - Pittsburgh Pirates over New York Yankees 4 games to 3
2003 - Boston Red Sox over Atlanta Braves 4 games to 3
2014 - Los Angeles Angels over Washington Nationals 4 games to 3
2015 - Pittsburgh Pirates over Kansas City Royals 4 games to 3

Well, the cards are separated, each team is placed in their ziplock snack-size baggies with a label and record attached to it, the team rosters are imported into iScore for stat tracking, the excel sheet is ready for tracking usage, my team notebook is ready for game-by-game reporting, and a day of strat-playing is coming up shortly. Hope you guys will enjoy the ride that is 1990!

Montreal Expos at Cincinnati Reds (Games 1-4)

Game 1 - Reds 1, Expos 0
- It was a scoreless game in the bottom of the 7th as both pitchers were on top of their games until Eric Davis walked and would then advance to third on a Paul O'Neill double. A batter later, Davis would score on a sac fly from Mariano Duncan as that was the only run of the game.

MON 000 000 000 - 0 5 0 (0-1)
CIN 000 000 10X - 1 6 1 (1-0)

Win: Browning (1-0)
Loss: Martinez (0-1)
Save: Myers (1st)
HR: None

Game 2 - Expos 5, Reds 4
- The Expos took a 4-0 lead after just one inning of play thanks to two triples from Marquis Grissom and Tim Wallach, a single from Tim Raines, and an RBI groundout from Andres Gallaraga. The Reds would finally tie the game up in the 6th however, getting a two-run double from Hal Morris and Eric Davis followed when he clubbed a two-run homer to even the score. Finally in the 10th, Tim Raines would double home Marquis Grissom for the game-winner.

Save: Burke (1st)
HR: E.Davis (1st)

Game 3 - Reds 10, Expos 7
- The Expos held a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning as it looked like it was going to be an easy win for them. However, the Reds had other ideas as they plated five runs in the bottom of the 8th thanks to a Paul O'Neill groundout, a three-run homer from Joe Oliver, and a solo blast from Billy Doran, the latter of the back-to-back blasts. In the 9th, the Reds would walk it off with a three-run homer from Mariano Duncan capping an incredible comeback.

MON 140 000 020 -  7  8 1 (1-2)
CIN 100 001 053 - 10 13 1 (2-1)

Game 4 - Reds 8, Expos 6
- It was more of the same for the Expos as their bullpen continues to let them down and let them lose ballgames. The Expos led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th when the Reds got a three-run homer from Billy Hatcher to tie the game at 6. An inning later, Hatcher knocked in the winning runs with a two-run single as he finished the game going 2 for 4 with a homer, walk, run scored, and five runs batted in.

Thanks for checking in everyone! We just got back about 3 PM eastern time we left Myrtle around 4am this morning. Really great weather down there and a great time spent with my family and girlfriend. It only rained one time the entire week we were there and it was a quick little downpour.

Caught a Myrtle Beach Pelicans game and golfed with my dad but besides that we hit the beach every day and also visited Charleston, South Carolina one day too. Charleston is seriously so beautiful and if you can get down there I highly recommend it, lots of history and awesome restaurants. I'm actually trying to get my masters at the College of Charleston.

I might post some pictures if you guys are interested! Looking forward to getting back to Strat but it was a nice little break.
