Montreal Expos at New York Mets (Games 27-29)

The Mets were able to squeak by the last-place Montreal Expos as they take two of three from them and they try to make a little noise. They will still be behind either the Reds or the Pirates depending on the result of their series following this one.

Game 1 - The Expos trailed 4-3 heading into the top of the 8th when they would plate four runs in the inning utilizing a bases loaded walk to Delino DeShields, a two-run single from Marquis Grissom, and a single from Tim Raines. MON 7, NYM 4

MON 021 000 040 - 7 13 1 (12-15)

Save: Sampen (1st)
HR: G.Jefferies (6th), D.Strawberry (10th), K.McReynolds (4th)

Game 2 - It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the 5th as the Mets' bats started making some noise. Sid Fernandez pitched very well, picking up his 4th win as he went seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out nine. NYM 4, MON 2

MON 000 001 100 - 2 9 1 (12-16)
NYM 000 030 10X - 4 7 0 (14-14)

Win: Fernandez (4-2)
Loss: Gardner (4-2)
Save: Franco (9th)
HR: D.Strawberry (11th)

Game 3 - It was all evened up at one in the bottom of the 7th when Darryl Boston turned on a high fastball and sent it deep into the center field seats as that would hold as the game-winner for the Mets as they take the series. Mark Carreon had the other run for the Mets, a solo homer as well. NYM 2, MON 1

MON 010 000 000 - 1 6 0 (12-17)
NYM 010 000 10X - 2 5 1 (15-14)

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates (Games 27-29)

The top two teams in the National League battled it out at Three Rivers Stadium but it would be the Reds who took 2 out of 3 from the Pirates to take over sole possession of first place. The Reds and Pirates do not play each other until the last series of the season as that could decide who clinches the NL Pennant.

Game 1 - Jack Armstrong tossed a gem for the Reds, as he went eight innings allowing one earned run and struck out five to pick up his 3rd win of the season. Eric Davis had three hits while Paul O'Neill had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. CIN 5, PIT 2

CIN 021 100 100 - 5 11 1 (15-12)
PIT 002 000 000 - 2  5 0 (14-13)

Win: Armstrong (3-1)
Loss: Smiley (1-4)
Save: Dibble (2nd)
HR: S.Bream (4th)

Game 2 - Homers were flying out of Three Rivers Stadium as seven home runs were hit between the two teams, but the Reds would win in a landslide as they take the series and look for the series sweep. Eric Davis went 3 for 5 with two home runs and drove in five runs as well. Bobby Bonilla led the Pirates offensively, as he went 3 for 5 as well with a double, home run, and four runs batted in. CIN 10, PIT 5

CIN 300 002 500 - 10 11 0 (16-12)
PIT 103 001 000 -  5  8 0 (14-14)

Win: Charlton (2-4)
Loss: Heaton (2-4)
Save: Myers (4th)
HR: B.Hatcher (2nd), E.Davis-2 (8th), P.O'Neill (5th), M.Duncan (5th), B.Bonilla (5th), J.King (4th)

Game 3 - The Pirates held a 6-5 lead in the top of the 9th when Bill Landrum would be called upon for the save. With two outs and the bases loaded full of Reds, Paul O'Neill would draw a bases loaded walk as the Reds tied the game. The game stayed knotted at six until the bottom of the 11th when Barry Bonds smacked a solo homer, his second of the day, as the Pirates avoid the sweep with a walk-off win. PIT 7, CIN 6

CIN 003 000 021 00 - 6 13 1 (16-13)
PIT 031 020 000 01 - 7 11 2 (15-14)

Win: Landrum (2-1)
Loss: Layana (1-2)
HR: E.Davis (9th), J.Oliver (3rd), S.Bream (5th), B.Bonds-2 (6th)

Love the race in the NL. Even the lowly Expos still have a shot. I'm putting my money on the Mets, but the real life champs will probably have something to say about that.

Yeah it sure is a tight one! I love it.

The Mets and the Reds I'd say are the favorites. I wish the Expos could get a little hitting, they just can't seem to get that clutch hit.

Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland Athletics (Games 30-32)

The Blue Jays fall in two close games to the A's but manage to steal the last one as they finish the season series with the Athletics. The A's won 10 of 14 games against the Jays but the runs were even at 52-52...tough season series for the Jays.

Game 1 - The Athletics committed three errors in the game but none of that would matter, as they would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game and they got a walk-off single from Willie Randolph to steal one from the Jays. OAK 6, TOR 5

TOR 121 000 010 - 5 10 0 (16-14)
OAK 011 010 021 - 6 10 3 (19-11)

Win: Nelson (1-0)
Loss: Acker (0-2)
HR: P.Borders (5th), R.Henderson (10th), D.Henderson-2 (5th)

Game 2 - The Blue Jays trailed 4-3 in the 8th when they would get a solo homer from Kelly Gruber to tie the game. The A's would bounce right back though and take the lead for good, as Willie Randolph came through once again with a bases-loaded sac fly. OAK 5, TOR 4

TOR 101 010 010 - 4 10 1 (16-15)
OAK 211 000 01X - 5 12 0 (20-11)

Win: Honeycutt (2-0)
Loss: Ward (1-4)
Save: Eckersley (14th)
HR: M.Wilson (2nd), K.Gruber (7th)

Game 3 - The Blue Jays managed to avoid the sweep as the offense exploded for 12 runs on 14 hits and David Wells picked up his 6th win of the season. George Bell and Kelly Gruber both collected three hits in five at-bats for the Jays. TOR 12, OAK 4

TOR 040 211 211 - 12 14 2 (17-15)
OAK 010 020 001 -  4  9 0 (20-12)

Win: Wells (6-1)
Loss: Moore (3-4)
HR: G.Bell (3rd)

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (Games 30-32)

The Boston Red Sox were able to squeak past the Chicago White Sox as they complete the three-game sweep and keep their pennant hopes alive. The Red Sox finish the season series with the White Sox at 10-4.

Game 1 - Mike Boddicker went seven strong innings allowing one run on five hits and also struck out one. Mike Greenwell led the day offensively for the Red Sox, going 2 for 3 with a double, a homer, and two runs knocked in. BOS 6, CHW 1

Loss: McDowell (0-7)
HR: C.Fisk (8th), M.Greenwell (2nd)

Game 2 - The Red Sox held a 3-0 lead going into the top of the 7th when the White Sox would score three times in the inning and even the score. Still knotted at 3 in the 9th, the Red Sox would get a solo walk-off homer from Luis Rivera to win it. BOS 4, CHW 3

CHW 000 000 300 - 3 10 1 (11-20)
BOS 000 012 001 - 4  9 0 (15-16)

Win: Gray (1-1)
Loss: Fernandez (0-2)
HR: L.Rivera (3rd)

Game 3 - Once more, it would be a walk-off winner for the Red Sox as they cap their season series with the White Sox with a sweep. The White Sox had evened the score in their half of the 9th, but Dwight Evans would lead off the Red Sox half of the ninth with a solo homer to win it. BOS 6, CHW 5

CHW 200 200 001 - 5 10 0 (11-21)
BOS 110 020 101 - 6 15 2 (16-16)

Pittsburgh Pirates at Montreal Expos (Games 30-32)

The Pirates traveled to Montreal for a crucial series with the last-place Expos. However, they would be upended, as they get swept by the Expos and now both the Pirates and Expos are tied for last place in a tight NL Race. Montreal outscored Pittsburgh 30-10 in the three-game set.

Game 1 - A three-run home run in the bottom of the 1st from Tim Wallach and a six-run 4th inning would lead the Expos to an easy landslide victory. Tim Wallach went 2 for 5 with a pair of home runs and drove in four. Oil Can Boyd tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and also striking out four. MON 10, PIT 0

PIT 000 000 000 -  0  4 2 (15-15)

Loss: Smith (5-2)
HR: T.Wallach-2 (6th)

Game 2 - The Expos held a 6-4 lead after five innings of play when they scored seven runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a commanding 13-4 lead. Both Tim Raines and Larry Walker had two hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs. MON 13, PIT 10

PIT 200 020 420 - 10 10 1 (15-16)
MON 400 027 00X - 13 11 0 (14-17)

Loss: Smiley (1-5)
Save: Nabholz (1st)
HR: D.Strawberry (12th), H.Morris (3rd), E.Davis (10th)

Game 3 - Mark Gardner had yet another dominant start, as he tossed a complete game shutout scattering four hits, walking three, and striking out 13 batters! Otis Nixon went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, and three runs batted in off the bench and Tim Wallach homered and drove in three as he has swung a hot bat lately. PIT 7, MON 0

PIT 000 000 000 - 0 4 0 (15-17)
MON 303 100 00X - 7 8 0 (15-17)

Wow... as soon as you mention that the Expos need to get more hitting, they wake up and then some! They also deal the Bucs a crippling blow as the season hits the home stretch.

I was literally just thinking about that as I wrote that up! It is insane...I shouldn't have wished for them to hit better, I should've wished for a million wishes!

Looks like the Reds are going to take it...but ten games left, a lot can happen. Thanks for checking in Dean!

New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds (Games 30-32)

The New York Mets traveled to Cincinnati just one game behind the Reds with 13 games to play. Well, they would drop two of three as the Reds extend their lead to two games over the Mets and three games over the Expos and Pirates with 10 left to play.

Game 1 - A three-run homer by Eric Davis propelled the Reds to an easy 9-3 victory. Jose Rijo picked up his 6th win as he went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits and struck out four. Hal Morris went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, and a solo homer. CIN 9, NYM 3

NYM 010 010 010 - 3  6 2 (15-15)
CIN 300 102 03X - 9 10 0 (17-13)

Win: Rijo (6-1)
Loss: Cone (1-7)
HR: D.Strawberry (12th), H.Morris (3rd), E.Davis (10th)

Game 2 - Gregg Jefferies and Darryl Strawberry both had RBI's in the top of the 1st and those two RBI's would help the Mets top the Reds to even the series. Doc Gooden scooped up his 5th win of the season, allowing one run on six hits and also struck out six. NYM 3, CIN 1

NYM 200 000 001 - 3 12 1 (16-15)
CIN 000 010 000 - 1  7 0 (17-14)

Win: Gooden (5-1)
Loss: Armstrong (3-2)
Save: Schatzeder (1st)
HR: None

Game 3 - Norm Charlton pitched extremely well, as he took a shutout into the 9th inning before the Mets finally got on the board with a three-run homer from Darryl Boston to ruin Charlton's chances of a shutout. However, Charlton would finish the game as he allowed three runs on four hits and struck out seven. Todd Benzinger went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI's getting a spot start. CIN 7, NYM 3

NYM 000 000 003 - 3  4 1 (16-16)
CIN 010 030 03X - 7 10 0 (18-14)

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics (Games 33-35)

The Oakland Athletics' bats seemed to be too much to muster for the Red Sox, as the A's take two of three as they continue to keep their spot atop the AL with seven games left. The Red Sox fall to a game below .500 and they will keep in third place.

Game 1 - The Red Sox trailed 5-4 in the top of the 7th when they scored twice on a Tom Brunansky single and a sacrifice fly from Dwight Evans. They would add another run in the 9th for some insurance with a Carlos Quintana single. Dwight Evans went 1 for 3 with a homer, walk, sac fly, and four RBI. BOS 7, OAK 5

BOS 301 000 201 - 7 12 3 (17-16)
OAK 111 020 000 - 5 11 1 (20-13)

Win: Clemens (5-4)
Loss: Stewart (1-5)
Save: Reardon (6th)
HR: D.Evans (4th)

Game 2 - The Red Sox evened the score in the 8th with a double from Mike Greenwell to make it 3-3. However, the A's would explode and plate four runs in their half of the 8th as they win handedly. Mark McGwire and Harold Baines each homered for the A's. OAK 7, BOS 3

BOS 000 110 010 - 3  9 0 (17-17)
OAK 010 200 04X - 7 13 0 (21-13)

Win: Honeycutt (3-0)
Loss: Gray (1-2)
HR: M.McGwire (11th), H.Baines (6th)

Game 3 - Todd Burns went seven innings allowing one run on five hits and also struck out five as he picked up the win for the A's in the rubber match. Jose Canseco went 1 for 4 with a three-run homer which would put the game out of reach in the 8th. OAK 4, BOS 1

BOS 010 000 000 - 1 6 0 (17-18)
OAK 000 000 13X - 4 7 1 (22-13)

Win: Burns (4-1)
Loss: Gardner (1-1)
Save: Eckersley (15th)
HR: J.Canseco (10th)

Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago White Sox (Games 33-35)

The Chicago White Sox got some good pitching in this series, as they were able to steal a pair of games from the Blue Jays and play a bit of spoiler. The White Sox are done, but it is always nice to beat a team ahead of you in the standings.

Game 1 - Greg Hibbard tossed seven innings of one run ball while allowing just three hits and striking out four as he scoops up his 5th win of the season. Steve Lyons went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored out of the second leadoff spot for the Sox. CHW 5, TOR 2

TOR 000 001 001 - 2  4 1 (17-16)
CHW 012 010 01X - 5 10 0 (12-21)

Win: Hibbard (5-2)
Loss: Steib (3-5)
Save: Thigpen (11th)
HR: K.Gruber (8th), D.Pasqua (3rd)

Game 2 - The White Sox got another great start from Melido Perez, as he went seven innings allowing one run on five hits as the Sox steal another one. Steve Lyons collected another two hits and Dan Pasqua homered for the second straight game. CHW 5, TOR 1

TOR 010 000 000 - 1 5 0 (17-17)
CHW 012 000 20X - 5 9 2 (13-21)

Win: Perez (3-4)
Loss: Stottlemyre (4-4)
HR: G.Bell (4th), D.Pasqua (4th)

Game 3 - Down 3-0 in the 5th, the Blue Jays exploded for four runs in the top of the 5th thanks to a three-run blast from George Bell, his 5th of the year. Bud Black went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out four to pick up his 4th win of the season. TOR 5, CHW 3

TOR 000 040 001 - 5 8 0 (18-17)
CHW 102 000 000 - 3 9 0 (13-22)

Win: Black (4-2)
Loss: McDowell (0-8)
Save: Henke (10th)
HR: G.Bell (5th)
