19 August-The Sinking Mariners
With their loss at Detroit today Seattle is now at .500. They have dropped their last 5. After an awesome 21-7 June they backslid with a 10-15 July. They are an awful 4-13 in August and have dropped into 3rd place behind the Rangers. They were tied for 1st less than a month ago.

Dennis Eckersley went the distance in the 3-1 Rays win over the Yankees. Randy Bass hit his 27th Homerun for Tampa. Miami and Arizona went head to head again. Miami had lively lumber in the 7-3 win. Craig Reynolds was inserted into the 4 hole for the 2nd time this season and blasted a 2 run Homerun in the 1st inning and hit a 3 run Homerun in the 7th. 4 Marlins pitchers held Arizona to just 4 hits. Colorado and Cincinnati were rained out and will play 2 tomorrow.

Homeruns- J.Padilla A(12th), O.McDowell(16th)

The Texas Rangers readily handled California Angels by a score of 6 to 2 at
Arlington Stadium.

Texas tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 5 base
hits. Darrell Porter led off and got things going when he slapped a one-base
hit. Steve Buechele next to the plate and he smacked a single. After an out
was recorded, Gary Ward then lined a base-hit to load the bases. Kazunori
Shinozuka followed next and he ripped a one-base hit scoring a run. After
another out, Scott Fletcher stepped in and he lined a single which accounted
for two additional runs. Fletcher took second on the throw. That scoring
would be all that was needed. Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.

Ed Correa(6-11) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Mike
Witt(11-7) suffered the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing 8 hits and 5
walks.

Lee Lacy had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Jose Modesto Darcourt allowed Earl Weaver to
rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Municipal Stadium as the
Baltimore Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians by the count of 14 to 5.

Lacy was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He banged out a single in the 3rd
inning, delivered a base-hit bringing in a run in the 4th inning, delivered a
one-base hit in the 7th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 8th
inning. Baltimore kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored
in 6 different innings.

Darcourt(10-10) got the victory, allowing 5 runs for the game. Shuji
Fujimoto(6-11) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around,

You GOTTA stretch Eichhorn out to get him enough innings for the ERA title.......

I have curtailed his ability to pitch a few times because HAL loves him. I may just let it go and see if he can get 162IP.

I appreciate that. It can be hard to follow with all the unfamiliar players, but I'm having a blast with this!

20 August-Attention turning to a possible Triple Crown
This is the 20th season since there was last a Triple Crown winner. With expansion in 1986, Colorado air with Omar Linares may update that list. In the 2nd game of a Double header with the Reds Linares had one of his best games of the season going 4 for 5 with a pair of Homeruns, scoring 3 runs while driving in 4. The Homeruns were solo shots. He had an RBI on each of his Singles. He has a solid lead in all 3 Triple Crown categories (.383/39/107). With the Rockies fading out of contention the city is still excited about baseball.

In game 1 of the Reds/Rockies DH the Reds won 3-1. Eric Davis hit a Homerun. In game 2 Colorado scored 4 runs in the 7th and held on for an 7-6 win. Eric Davis hit a 3 run Homerun. Besides Linares  Mitch Williams earned his 1st save as he and Gossage switched roles after some rough outings. Gossage gave up a 2 run Single to Buddy Bell. In 10 days Gossage has seen his ERA jump from 2.93 to 4.17. The Marlins nipped the Diamondbacks 5-4. Arizona Rf Tony Brewer hit a 2 run Homerun in the 5th. Miami scored 5 runs in the 6th. 1b Alejo O'Reilly hit a 2 run Homerun. Gar Redus hit a PH Homerun off Ken Howell in the 9th to add drama to his save. The Yankees whipped the Rays 8-1. Don Mattingly hit a Homerun and scored 3 runs. Pags also went deep. Ron Guidry was amazing. He allowed a Homerun to Tony Phillips in the 4th inning. That was the only baserunner he allowed the entire game earning an 87 game score.

In a game for the baseball purist, Phil Niekro(12-7) and Vida Blue(5-8)

victorious over Colorado Rockies, 3 to 1.

The game started off with Cincinnati taking the lead in the first with 2 runs

stepped up next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.
That early scoring was all that Niekro needed. Cincinnati had 6 hits for the
afternoon while Colorado had 3.

Niekro was helped out by John Franco who recorded his 29th save.

Homeruns- D.Mattingly(28th), M.Pagliarulo(26th), T.Phillips(8th)

Ron Guidry threw a 1 hitter as the New York AL Yankees topped the Tampa Bay
Rays by a score of 8 to 1 at Tropicana Field.

Guidry(8-9) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Tampa Bay offense. He
didn't allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 9 innings. New York AL totaled
13 hits on the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Jay Tibbs(8-13). He was knocked around by New York AL,
allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. When questioned about his
counterpart after the game, Tibbs was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious
very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Guidry brought
his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly.
He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

21 August-Red Sox tied for Wild Card with Tigers after beating Angels
Boston took it to Kirk McCaskill today at Fenway with a 5-3 win showing they may be a force in October. Bill Buckner hit a Grand Slam in the 5th knocking McCaskill out of the game. He was not sharp allowing 6 walks in 5 1/3 IP. The Red Sox bullpen trio of Schiraldi, Kadota, and Tsuda is very good and all 3 of them had a scoreless inning. Gary Pettis did steal 3 bases in the loss. Minnesota need 11 innings to beat Milwaukee. Andy Allanson had the game winning hit scoring Tom Brunansky. The Brewers are starting to come apart. That was their first extra inning loss of the season  (11-1). They are 7-13 this month and what good fortune they did have has turned into a 2 games below .500 record. Arizona beat Montreal 4-3. Stan Javier had a 2 run Single in the 3rd. It got more interesting when Expos PH Fausto Alvarez hit a 2 run Homerun in the 8th inning.

22 August-Back in Action
I am finally moved to Tampa area. Now I can get some Strat going again

Detroit won in Tampa 8-1. Alan Trammell and George Foster each had 3 hits. Lou Whitaker and Ed Hearn went deep. Andres Galarraga's solo shot completed the Rays lumber attack. Montreal held off a 3 run 9th by Arizona and hung on for the 5-3 win. Mitch Webster had a pair of RBIs. Arizona outhomered Montreal 2-0 (Jones, Ochiai), but they were both solo shots. Jose Rijo improved to 4-14. Jeff Reardon was forced into service and recorded save #25. The Brewers withstood a 4 run bottom of the 9th to hold off the Rockies 10-7. Milwaukee rang up 17 hits. Robin Yount had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Rob Deer went deep. The Rockies are 6-14 this month allowing over 10 hits per game with a -29 run differential.  Texas beat Miami 2-1.
