4 April
I need to show the next day's starters and yesterday's best performances every day. Shame on me for 3 April's results. Houston has shut out Atlanta both games of the year.

Mike Scott struck out 11 batters at The Astrodome where the Houston Astros
beat the Atlanta Braves by the score of 2 to 0.
 
Scott(1-0) was tremendous on the mound for Houston.  He didn't allow much,
just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Houston and Atlanta each finished the
night with 4 hits.  
 
Kazuhisa Kawaguchi(0-1) absorbed the loss.  Chuck Tanner was upset after the
game.  'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?',
he said.  'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's
printed in the rule book.'

In a two run game the San Diego Padres got by the Los Angeles Dodgers by the
score of 4 to 2.
 
Dave Dravecky(1-0) had a solid outing for San Diego.  He went 5 innings
allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.  San Diego had 7 hits for the afternoon.
 
Dravecky got help from Euclides Rojas who earned his 1st save.  Rick
Honeycutt(0-1) suffered the loss.  He surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk in 5
innings.

Willie Wilson hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Kansas City Royals
outscored the New York AL Yankees 6 to 4.
 
New York AL was unable to claim the lead after Kansas City went ahead in the
7th inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits.  Dan Quisenberry earned the
save with a perfect ninth, his 1st save.  
 
The win went to Hisashi Yamada(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. Tom
Niedenfuer(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  He gave up 4 hits and
no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.

The Texas Rangers edged the Philadelphia Phillies at Arlington Stadium by the
score of 5 to 4.
 
Texas brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 4
hits.  It was enough scoring to earn the victory.  Philadelphia was retired
without difficulty in the 9th.  
 
Ken Schrom(1-0) got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Akio Saito
recorded his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Don Carman(0-1) in relief.

One run was the difference at Anaheim Stadium as the California Angels offense
put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 7th inning and defeated the Seattle
Mariners in 11 innings 6 to 5.
 
The score was tied at 5 after nine. California won the game in the 11th
inning.  After an out was recorded, Wally Joyner lashed a single.  Dick
Schofield stepped into the batter's box and he smacked a single.  Reggie
Jackson struck out, unable to help the rally.  Gary Pettis followed and he
reached on an error giving California the win as 32,358 happy fans joyfully
celebrated.  California rapped out 9 hits for the night.  
 
The win was credited to Chuck Finley(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing
no runs. Matt Young(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He was a hard-luck loser
as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

Stadium where the Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 5 to 4.
 
Hisanobu Watanabe(1-0) was solid if not spectacular.  He surrendered 7 hits
and 6 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Miami was out-hit by Colorado, 12 hits to
8.  
 
Gene Nelson earned the save, his 1st.  Charlie Leibrandt(0-1) ended up with
the loss.  He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.  
 
'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it
was nothing.' Watanabe said.  'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put
the ball where I wanted it.'

At Chase Field, the Arizona faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel.  Julio Romero(1-0) finally bested his San Francisco counterpart, Mike
Krukow(0-1), by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Romero pitched a solid game.  He went 7 and 2/3 innings surrendering 8 hits
and 2 walks.  Arizona won despite being out-hit by San Francisco 9 hits to 6.
 
Ron Robinson earned his 1st save.  Krukow was hit with the loss.  He
surrendered only 3 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.

Ken Landreaux had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays bested the
Toronto Blue Jays 8 to 5 at Tropicana Field.
 
Tampa Bay came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning when they had 4
base hits.  After an out was recorded, Jose Raul Delgado keyed the rally when
he delivered a one-base hit.  Eiji Kanamori was next and he doubled.  Rance
Mulliniks then drew a walk to load the bases.  Landreaux followed and he
slapped a base-hit.  Jose Uribe stepped into the box and doubled.  Tampa Bay
had a total of 12 hits for the game.  
 
Walt Terrell(1-0) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 7 innings. Yo****aka
Katori was credited with his 1st save.  Dave Stieb(0-1) took the loss.  He
allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Nolan Ryan would have lost his no hitter in the 9th if he had remained in the game. Houston has shut out the Braves 3 straight.

In a good matchup it was the Chicago NL Cubs 6, the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 at
Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Chicago NL claimed the early lead in the first inning as they scored 3 runs on
3 base hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Ron Cey who deflated the
crowd as he banged out a single bringing home two baserunners.  Pittsburgh
was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.  
 
Rogelio Garcia(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Lee
Smith was credited with his 2nd save.  Jose Riveira(0-1) was hit with the
loss.  He gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.

First baseman Greg Walker blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Chicago AL
White Sox bested the Minnesota Twins in 11 innings 6 to 4 at Comiskey
Park.
 
Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings.  Chicago AL came out the
victor in the 11th inning.  After an out was recorded, Harold Baines started
the rally when he stroked a single.  Jose Antonio Estrada got his turn next,
but he was a strikeout victim.  Walker then clubbed a two-run home run giving
Chicago AL the victory and sending the 22,879 home-town fans home happy.
Both teams ended up with 9 hits on the afternoon.  
 
The winning pitcher was Yoshiaki Ishimoto(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 3 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings at Riverfront
Stadium by the score of 7 to 6.
 
The score was tied at 4 after nine.  St. Louis won it in the 11th inning.
Dick Davis led off and got things going when he drew a walk.  Gary Rajsich
came to the plate and drew a walk.  Pedro Luis Rodriguez then stroked a
base-hit.  Makoto Shimada followed and he worked the squeeze play to
perfection.  Al Newman came up to bat and reached on an error.  Kazuyuki
Shirai continued the rally and drew a walk.  After another out, Seiichi Sato
then threw one that got by the catcher for a passed ball.  Vince Coleman was
a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Although they lost, Cincinnati did
out-hit St. Louis 14 to 9.  
 
Noriaki Okabe(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Todd Worrell
got the save, his 2nd.  The loss was charged to Sato(0-1) in relief.

Kimiyasu Kudo racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts as the Colorado
Rockies defeated the Miami Marlins by a score of 3 to 2 at Joe Robbie
Stadium.
 
Kudo(1-0) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He allowed just 4
hits and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.  Miami had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.  
 
Kudo got help from Rich Gossage who earned his 2nd save.  Zane Smith(0-1) took
the loss.  Kudo was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a
little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and
a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet.  Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'

Will Clark touched them all and had 4 RBI at Chase Field where the San
Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 13 to 6.
 
Clark was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at
their team's expense.  He doubled which brought home a run in the 1st inning
and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 6th inning.  San
Francisco had 14 hits for the game and Arizona had 9.  
 
The winning pitcher was Frank Tanana(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in 6 innings.
John Denny(0-1) took the loss.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up
7 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Jays.
 
Genji Kaku(1-0) put on a good performance.  He didn't give up much, just 5

Tampa Bay had 5.

In a two run game the California Angels got by the Kansas City Royals by the
score of 6 to 4.
 
California had 3 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning with the help of 4
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Wally Joyner who deflated the
crowd as he doubled which was good for two runs.  Donnie Moore pitched a
perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save.  
 
Lamarr Hoyt(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Mark
Gubicza(0-1) was the loser.  He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 9

Second baseman Hatsuhiko Tsuji collected 2 extra-base hits at Oympic Stadium
as the Atlanta Braves beat the Montreal Expos 5 to 2.
 
Atlanta came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs using
3 hits.  Tsuji led off and keyed the rally when he ripped a base-hit.  Tsuji
then stole second base.  After an out was recorded, Ozzie Virgil then
doubled.  Jiyunichi Kashiwabara followed next and he drew a walk.  Warren
Cromartie stepped into the box and doubled.  Atlanta banged out 8 hits on the
afternoon.  
 
Jeff Dedmon(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Paul Assenmacher
preserved the game for Dedmon, recording his his 1st save.  Jose Rijo(0-1)
was the losing pitcher.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Whitaker.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 5th inning and smacked a single in the 8th
inning.  For the game Detroit out-hit Baltimore 10 to 6.  
 
Jose Guzman(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Kazuyuki

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  Boston won the hard fought
contest in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Wade Boggs lashed a
single, and an error was also committed.  Marty Barrett stepped up next and
he delivered a base-hit.  One out later, Rice then lined a single giving
Boston the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.  Despite losing,
Houston out-hit Boston 15 to 8.

Willie Upshaw slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI and Rick Mahler went the
distance at Mile High Stadium as the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks 6 to 1.
 
Colorado came up with 3 runs in the 4th inning when they came up with 5 base
hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Don Slaught who brought a roar from
the partisan Mile High Stadium fans when he laced a base-knock scoring two
baserunners.  Colorado managed 11 hits in their victory.  
 
The win was credited to Mahler(2-0) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Omar Ajete(0-1) was charged with the loss.  He was touched for 9 hits and 2
walks in 6 innings.

40,947 fans were treated to a fine game at Joe Robbie Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Miami Marlins won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
 
Miami had the game winning rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs using 2
hits.  Charlie Moore started the inning off right when he drew a walk.  Craig
Reynolds stepped up next and he laced a base-knock.  Two outs later Tom Foley
came to the plate and ripped a base-knock.  Foley took second on the throw.
R.J. Reynolds came up and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Alejo O'Reilly
came up to bat and reached on an error.  Miami had 12 hits overall, while San
Diego had 8.  
 
The win was credited to Osamu Sasaki(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Sasaki got help from Ken Howell who was credited with his 1st save.  Al
Nipper(0-1) took the loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up
11 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Isamu Kida(1-1) pitched okay, well enough for the win. He went 5 innings and
surrended up 5 hits and 3 walks.  Tampa Bay ended up with 12 hits for the
game while Texas had 7.  
 
Kida was helped out by Doug Corbett who recorded his 1st save.  The losing
pitcher was Takamasa Suzuki(0-1).  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 6
walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Unless you are hands-on with each game, there's not much you can do.  If you were actively managing the club, you could have allowed him to go for the CG, then skipped his next start, or backed him up a day (or whatever made sense logically).

Oh, well...Hal's in good company this year (Dave Roberts). hmm

One question: Does the game increase a pitcher's chances of being hurt if he is overused?

Designated hitter Lonnie Smith had 4 hits and scored 3 times and Choji Murata
came through with a solid 6 innings as the Kansas City Royals topped the
California Angels in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at Royals Stadium.
 
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings.  Kansas City ended
up winning it in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Smith lined a
base-hit.  Pedro Jova stepped into the batter's box and he reached on an
error.  George Brett then was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Koichi
Hada was up next and he banged out a single resulting in an exciting win for
Kansas City and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  For

Second baseman Enriquito Diaz had 3 base hits at Oympic Stadium as the
Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 4 to 3.
 
Montreal brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning when
they had 3 base hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Hikaru Takano who
electrified Oympic Stadium when he doubled with all three baserunners
touching home.  Atlanta had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.  
 
The win went to Takano(1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Jeff Reardon
preserved the game for Takano, recording his his 1st save.  Dan Petry(0-1)
suffered the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 4
innings.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings.  Baltimore came out the
victor in the 12th inning.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Cal Ripken who
silenced the crowd when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand
Slam homerun.  Baltimore had 11 hits for the afternoon.

Victor Mesa had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Oakland Co Stadium where the Seattle
Mariners beat the Oakland A's by the score of 5 to 4.
 
Seattle scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  Ken Phelps drew a walk.
Reynolds got a good lead and stole second.  David Green got his chance to
keep things going, but he went down on strikes.  One out later, Tom Brookens
stepped in and he drew a walk.  Mesa came up to bat and laced a single.  Phil
Bradley added his contribution to the rally and drew a walk to load the
bases.  Oakland went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.  
 
Katsuo So(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Luis Sanchez earned
the save, his 1st.  The loss was charged to Dave Stewart(1-1) in relief.  He
pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing no hits and 1 walk.

30,269 fans were treated to a fine game at Dodger Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Los Angeles Dodgers won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
 
Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings.  Los Angeles came
out on top in the 14th inning.  Kiyoyuki Nagashima doubled.  After an out was
recorded, Len Matuszek stepped up to the plate and he slapped a one-base hit
giving Los Angeles the win much to the delight of the home town crowd.  Los
Angeles finished with 15 hits in the victory.  
 
Orel Hershiser(1-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Frank
Williams(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 2
hits and no walks.

Doug Drabek(1-0) and Yuji Inoue(0-1) treated the Pittsburgh fans to a fine
pitching duel at Three Rivers Stadium.  The Pittsburgh Pirates eventually
emerged as victors over the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 3 to
0.
 
Pittsburgh did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning with 3 runs on 3
base hits.  After two outs Lazaro Marino Junco started the rally when he
doubled.  Jim Morrison came next and he was walked intentionally.  Tony Pena
then belted a three-run homer.  Kaoru Okazaki stepped in and he doubled.  The
pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score
again.  
 
Don Robinson recorded his 2nd save.

Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by the score of 5 to 4 at Mile High
Stadium.
 
Greg Mathews(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Colorado.  He went 8
innings surrendering 10 hits and 3 walks.  Arizona threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.  
 
Rich Gossage got the save, his 3rd.  The losing pitcher was Scott
McGregor(1-1).  It was another victory for Colorado at Mile High Stadium.
