That is always good advice Zimmy!  Especially for this club.  I am pleasantly surprised at how well Zach Duke has responded in the fifth starter slot.  The offense has been giving him runs to work with.  He was not a very effective pitcher that season.

AFTER SEVEN INNINGS

Chicago White Sox       0 0 3   0 0 0   1

PIRATES                      4 2 0   0 0 0   4

The White Sox get a run in the top of the seventh inning as Shawn Chacon comes on in relief of Zach Duke and gives up a solo home run to Jerry Owens, his first of the season, and his seventeenth run batted in.  Gavin Floyd becomes the new Chicago hurler in the bottom of the inning and he is roughed up.  With runners on first and third with nobody down, Jack Wilson singles into center field scoring Jose Bautista for his 22nd ribby of the season.  That is followed later by a three run blast off the bat of Jason Bay to left field.  It was his sixth home run of the year, and his 37th, 38th and 39th runs driven in.  STRETCH TIME!!

FINAL SCORE

Chicago White Sox       0 0 3   0 0 0   1 0 0 –  4    9    0

PIRATES                      4 2 0   0 0 0   4 0 x – 10  15   0

WP:  Zach Duke (4-1)

LP:  Mark Buehrle (9-2)

SV:   --------

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to put up big numbers for Zach Duke and the number five man in the Pirates’ rotation does just enough to get his fourth win of the season against one loss in the Pirates’ 10-4 today over the Chicago White Sox at PNC Park.  Duke went six innings allowing three runs and seven hits, striking out two.  He is now 4-1 on the season.

He got plenty of offense help as his mates banged out fifteen hits led by Jose Bautista who was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and on run batted in.  He is now batting .247.  Jerry Owens paced the Pale Hose by going 3 for 5 including a home run, two runs scored ands on e run knocked in.  His batting average is now .320.

The win improves Pittsburgh to a record of 31-39 and they trail the pace setting Chicago Cubs by six games.  The Cubbies dropped a 2-1 decision to the San Diego Padres this afternoon.

The time of the game was three hours and two minutes, and the paid attendance was 34,984 on a gorgeous sun splashed afternoon in the Steel City.

Tomorrow’s starters look to be Tom Gorzelanny (3-9; 4.32) for the Pirates, and Jon Garland (6-5; 4.32) for Chicago.  And until then, SO LONG EVERYBODY!!!

We were very patient today at the plate against Buehrle.  We were getting ahead in the counts and forcing him to pitch from behind.

If there's any trouble on board, you can always tell the captain that you are a Pirate skipper. biggrin
