Brooklyn took a 7-1 lead into the ninth inning and had to hold on as the Pirates mounted a furious come back. Meyer pitched 8 2/3 innings, finally getting the win, and Hughes finished with a shaky save. Candelaria went 6 innings, taking the loss for Pittsburgh.

Campanella and Hodges blasted homers, and B. Morgan rapped a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving home a run.

The Pirates' ninth started with Ott drawing a walk. Lacy batted for Bibby and tripled home the run. Moreno popped out and Foli whiffed. Parker drew a walk. Meyer was laboring, but was left in the game to try and get the final out. Milner lined a rbi single ending Meyer's day. Hughes relieved to face B. Robinson. "Bojangles" greeted Hughes with a 3 run tater. The Dodgers' lead was down to one run. Madlock kept things going with a single before Garner ended the game by grounding out.

In a marquee match up, Guidry went all the way for the win. Gooden pitched 8 innings, getting the loss.

The Pirates looked like they would drive Gooden from the game early, as they scored twice in the third inning, but could have pushed more runs across. Moreno led off with a single. Foli laid down a perfect bunt, beating it out for a single. Parker walked to load the bases with no outs. Milner lined a 2 run single. With runners at first and third and no outs, B. Robinson struck out for the first out. Madlock then bounced into a double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Guidry was mowing down the Dodgers' hitters. Campanella whiffed to start the ninth inning. Snider then hit a home run to make it a 1 run contest. Hodges walked, and Guidry was on the verge of being pulled, but P. Reese grounded into a game ending double play.

The Yanks rallied for 2 runs in the top of the ninth to take the second game of the series. Chandler pitched 8 innings for the win, and Murphy picked up the save with 1 inning of work. Lemon took the loss, going 8 2/3 innings.

Dimaggio swatted a 2 run homer in the third, giving the Yanks the lead. Cleveland chipped away, scoring 1 run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to take the lead.

Lemon started the ninth looking to go the distance. Gordon led off with a walk, and Selkirk also got a free pass batting for Chandler. Crosetti put down a bunt, moving both men into scoring position. Rolfe grounded out, leaving Lemon 1 out away from victory. Dimaggio looped a single, scoring the tying run, and Lemon was replaced by Paige to face Ruth. The Babe delivered a rbi double, breaking the tie before Gehrig grounded out to end the inning.

Hegan led off the bottom half inning with a single. Judnich hit for Christopher and drew a walk. Clark laid down a sac bunt, moving both runners into scoring position. Boudreau singled home the tying run and Murphy was called in to relieve Ruffing. One pitch later, the game was over. Keltner drilled a walk off single.
