I've been doing one of these since the 2005 season when I resumed getting new card sets. I call them "Dragster Tourneys" because they are made to be completed quickly. For those that have checked out my old school basketball project, the format is essentially the same; double elimination, ladder seeding. With three divisions, it necessitates re-apportioning the teams into two divisions, which I prefer anyway. Best of five LCS, best of seven WS. At some point I will share the previous winners, but they have all been fairly plausible, even with only two games minimum for each team. The ladder seeding tends to sift out the riff-raff, although a couple of years ago the Rockies just about screwed that up.

Super advanced, C & D, all the bells and whistles with a few tweaks (mainly expanded rare plays.) I honor all injuries and use the solitaire rest chart, so occasionally a team may miss a key player or two. Such is life. Each team is guaranteed at least one home game. With such a small sample size I have no illusions of accuracy--I just like to get a feel for the league, and have found this a suitable way to do so. Consistent with that theme, I keep minimal stats; R, RBI, HR, SB, E, GW for position players, IP, ER, W-L-S for pitchers. 

In spite of this minimalist approach, or perhaps because of it, I have found this to be a very enjoyable format. Thought I might miss this season--lack of funds made it impossible to acquire it in a timely fashion, but the streak continues as my wife came through with Christmas money and an order to use it. May delay 2016, but for now, the 2015 Dragster Tourney...

Ian Kinsler swats a two-run homer in the eighth inning off of Craig Breslow to give the Tigers a come-from-behind victory. Kinsler has three hits and three RBIs as Detroit battles back late from a 5-2 deficit and the Sox waste a solid start from Wade Miley.

Khris Davis ended a 12-inning barn burner with his second bomb of the game, as the Brewers take the opener. Adam Lind tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a pinch hit single off of John Axford, plating Ryan Braun who had entered the game earlier as a pinch hitter himself. Elian Herrera's two miscues at third led to three unearned runs and nearly wasted a solid outing from Jimmy Nelson (6.1 IP/1 ER) until the Brew Crew's late game heroics.

No. I suppose I could, but it was not available yet when this set came out, and frankly I am a little leery about using it until I see some data reflecting its effect. Each hitter has accumulated their stats against those shifts anyway, so it seems as though the results are already "baked in." In a quick project like this I guess it would be a negligible thing--but there is just something about the rule that seemed a bit forced, as if Strat felt it needed to address the issue quickly. But I may try it eventually, just to get a feel for it.

Chris Archer was in complete command until issuing a ninth inning homer to JD Martinez. Archer got the hook before he could complete the win, but the Rays knocked a sore armed Anibal Sanchez out of the game in the fifth, then savaged the ill-named Kyle Lobstein for four runs in less than an inning for a an easy opening win.

Robinson Cano's bouncer up the middle ended a fourteen inning classic from Safeco, plating pinch runner Franklin Gutierrez with the winning run. Oakland's normally beleaguered bullpen had worked 7 1/3 scoreless innings prior to Cano's heroics. Youngster Ketel Marte had three hits for the M's, including a homer, to go along a with a SB.

Adonis Garcia's two-run homer kept the Braves from blowing an out-of-the-gate 4-0 lead and sent them up the winner's side of the ladder. Garcia also added an RBI-double and a single to a three hit game to pace the Braves. Another fine performance by Brandon Phillips (2-4, 3 RBIs) goes to waste as Pedro Villereal fails to hold the lead for the Reds.

A match-up of ex-Rays goes terribly wrong for the Padres as James Shields is hammered, and Matt Garza is ascendant. Khris Davis continues to scorch the ball; four runs, four hits, three doubles, thee RBIs, but the whole team hits (Hernan Perez had 4 RBIs and Adam Lind had 3) and the Brewers move on, while the punchless Pads fall to the loser's side of the ladder.

Marcus Semien scores two, drives in two, and bangs out three hits against his former team to lead a well-balanced Oakland attack. The A's get another solid outing from their nondescript bullpen (2 1/3 scoreless) and get RBIs from Billy Butler and Mark Canha for the third straight game.

Chicago is eliminated and will not get to use ace Chris Sale (who was third in GS on the Sox, so third in the rotation by default.) In response, Chris rips up an Oakland jersey, saying that aside from being angry at being overlooked by a dumb rule, Green and Gold are ugly colors, and no one should have to pitch in them. No comment from the perplexed A's.
