The Bucs and Birds engaged in a lengthy battle that was ultimately decided by little used St. Louis OF Pete Bourjos. Bourjos homered to give the Cards a brief lead, then drove home the series winner, plating Kolten Wong with one out in the twelfth inning. The Pirates' chances were largely torpedoed by a first batter injury to Francisco Liriaino that forced Pittsburgh to go to it's bullpen. St' Louis wins the NL and moves on to play the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

World Series is set, St. Louis vs. Toronto. American League won the All-Star game in 2015, so the Jays score home field and open the best-of-seven at their home.

World Series Game One

St. Louis (6-1) at Toronto (5-0)

Trailing 3-1, the Jays explode for five sixth inning runs, Kevin Pillar providing another key blow, a two-run single, and Toronto takes the early series lead. RA Dickey overcomes two home runs--all solo--and gives the Canadians a solid 7 innings and Roberto Osuna also gets taken deep but holds on for another save. The usually powerful Blue Jay offense goes situational, driving in half their runs with outs.

The Blue Jays get all the scoring they will need in the first inning: a solo blast by Josh Donaldson and RBI single by Troy Tulowitzki. After that Michael Wacha settled down, but his mates could only get to Toronto starter David Price once, on Peter Bourjos' home run. Both pitchers toss complete games, but it's Price who wins with another dominant perfromance, and Wacha who falls short for the second time despite another quality start. The Jays hold home field as the series moves to Busch Stadium.

World Series Game Three

Toronto (7-0) at St. Louis (6-3)

The Blue Jays blow open a close game with a colossal ninth inning rally, and they push the Cards to the brink of elimination. MVP candidate Josh Donaldson drives in four, but the Jays also get unexpected contributions from role players like Ezequiel Carrera (2 R and an RBI) and Ryan Goins (R and 2 RBI). Even pitcher Mark Buehrle crossed the plate. Again, no Blue Jay homers, in stead a continuous stream of base runners bury the Cards and their beleaguered bullpen. Steven Piscotty drove in a couple for the Redbirds, but his efforts are dwarfed by the Toronto offensive depth and now the Jays stand on the precipice of an undefeated run in the playoffs, a heretofore unprecedented achievement.

Any pretense of Cardinal hope is crushed before the seats at Busch Stadium were warm. Toronto plates five first inning runs and keeps pouring it on. Troy Tulowitzki scores three times and drives home a run, and Chris Collabello adds two of each to lead another total team effort. Marco Estrada gets the win despite allowing six runs in six innings. Jhonny Peralta homers and drives in four for the Cardinals, but their inability to limit the Blue Jays at all leaves his effort wasted.

Josh Donaldson is named MVP of the playoffs. The Toronto 3B led or tied for the league in runs scored (9), RBIs (12), total runs--R+RBI (21), game winning RBI (3), and home runs (3).

The Blue Jays become the first team in my eleven years of running this tournament to go undefeated, 9-0.

The odd thing is though the Jays put together a memorable run, no individual players did. The league leaders were among the least impressive in the decade-plus I have been doing this. Quick series will do that.

One of these days I will do a champions tourney.
