Team Natural Cycle With Pitcher Homering
Permalink

.    An unusual thing occurred today in the September 8th game featuring Philadelphia at Chicago.

In the top of the sixth, Bob Boone led off with a single against Ken Holtzman. Larry Bowa then doubled. Bud Harrelson followed that with a triple, which scored two. That brought up Philly starter, Randy Lerch. One of the better hitting pitchers in the league, Lerch smacked a two run homerun, thereby completing a team cycle in natural order.

Even stranger, it was Lerch's second homerun of the game, as he took Holtzman deep in the third. For good measure, he added a double in the fourth. Both homers came off Holtzman's card, with Lerch having normal power.

Want another twist?  The Phillies didn't even win the game. Find out what happened in the game write up later this week.

You may never repeat anything close to that in your Strat universe.

When the bottom of the order produces and you still lose, that's a tough pill to swallow.........

Amazing.

That's got to be right up there with four straight players homering as a seldom-seen oddity.
