1982-2016 MLB PC Tournament
Permalink

Here's a project I've started on the computer and I'm going to be posting box scores and maybe some thoughts along the way.  Outside of a few seasons from the 1950's, I have every MLB season on PC from 1982 to 2016.  This tournament will consist of 256 teams from that time span (1982-2016).  I was inspired to do this by a C&D tournament I was following on a Strat page I follow on Facebook.  The teams are seeded #1 through #256 based on their winning percentage from the regular season.  Now, who's included in this tournament from those season?  Every playoff team to start, whether you won your division or were a wildcard team.  From 1982-1993, there were four playoff teams in each postseason.  Starting in 1994, the divisions were split and the wildcard was introduced with three division winners and one wildcard team from each league which lasted until 2011.  From 2012 to the present day, we have our current format of three division winners and then two wildcard teams playing a one-game playoff.  Because of the strike in 1994, I took the teams leading the divisions at the time of the strike.  That put the total team number to 242.  I still needed to fill out the bracket with 14 more teams.  If a team was in a one-game playoff previous to 2012, for a division or a wildcard spot, they were included.  The rest were filled in with the teams with the best winning percentages not to make the playoffs (i.e. 1993 SF Giants with 103 wins).  So here's the breakdown of teams:

1982-1993--53 teams (48 playoff teams and 5 extra teams)
1994--10 teams
1995-2011--142 teams (136 playoff teams and 6 extra teams)
2012-2016--51 teams (50 playoff teams and 1 extra team)

1994 Teams: Montreal Expos, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros

Extra Teams: 1982 Baltimore Orioles, 1985 New York Yankees, 1985 New York Mets, 1990 Chicago White Sox, 1993 San Francisco Giants, 1995 California Angels, 1998 San Francisco Giants, 1999 Cincinnati Reds, 2007 San Diego Padres, 2008 Minnesota Twins, 2009 Detroit Tigers, 2013 Texas Rangers

I orginally broke it down into 8 brackets of 32 teams but once I set it up on Strat, the teams were just seeded #1 through #256.

I'm on no kind of time schedule, so this will be played when I have time.  I've got a good start to things as I'm through the first eight matchups.

Each matchup will be a Best of 7 series.  The format is 2-2-1-1-1 as I've always appreciated that more than the 2-3-2 format.

Some teams will use a three-man rotation while others will use a four-man rotation.  If a pitcher has an asterick by his name, he's allowed to go every fourth game (Am I saying that right?  Would be games 1-4-7 in a series for example).

Each roster will be a 25 man roster which I decide before each series.  The DH will be in play for all games.  There will also be NO injuries as quite frankly, I want to use the best players and see how they do against one another.  When you set up a tournament on Strat, it goes in order and I don't think there's a way to change the order you go in (or I haven't found a way).  So #1 v. #256 is the first matchup, #2 v. #255 next, and then on down the line.

The first matchup is the top seed 2001 Seattle Mariners v. the bottom seed (and only team with a losing record) 1994 Texas Rangers.

Any questions or comments, would love to hear back.  Hope you all enjoy following along.

23 Runners Left on Base and 3-26 with Runners in Scoring Position (including 1-18 in Game 2) won't win you too many games, no matter who it's against.  Texas has gotten very good starting pitching and pitching overall, which has shocked me from looking at their stats from that year.  Ichiro 5-10, getting on base but zero runs scored.

Another great performance by The Gambler puts the #1 overall seed on the ropes.  Kenny Rogers is now 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his two starts.  Boone, the hero in Game 3, becomes the goat, as his throwing error (one of two on the game for the 2b) with two outs leads to the winning run.  The Mariners now need to run the table over the last three games, two of which will be back in Seattle where they are 0-2 thus far.

OUCH!!

Are you sure you've got the real Edgar Martinez in that Seattle lineup?

David Bell's second inning Grand Slam was just enough for Seattle to hang on and survive for one more game.  The Rangers tried to claw their way back slamming three solo home runs (their only three hits in the game), but Nelson and Sasaki were able to close the door over the final two innings.  Game 6 in Texas is next.

He finally managed to collect a couple hits and a walk after that horrific 0-16 start.  I moved him from third to fifth for this game.  Seemed to work, haha.

Maybe now he'll heat up.

Are you telling me Edgar struck out five times in that last game?

That's unheard-of.
