I had a tough time picking the D-Backs. I really like both of the Cleveland teams, but Johnson and Schilling as your top starters are hard to go against

Looking forward to start of Q4B111. I like it that you have a DH division for the 01 M's.

Is that a prediction? Who do you think will win the other divisions, especially the elite?

 Here's my two cents' worth:

Elite- 27 Yankees

DH- 98 Yankees

East- 31 A's

Central/West- 2001 Diamondbacks

Gutsy call on the 2001 Diamondbacks, but they did have a great season last year. We'll see if either one of those Indians teams challenge them.

That elite division is such a tough call. 1927 Yankee are always a favorite, and no doubt about the talent on the team. But the competition is stiff.

1998 Yankees and the 2001 Mariners are probably the favorites, but you can't discount the 1984 Tigers and the 1989 A's have lots of pop.

1931 A's certainly have the capability, but the 1939 Yankees and 1994 Expos always make me nervous.

 My predictions

Elite Div- '27 Yankees

DH Div- '01 M's

East Div- 31 A's

Central/West Div- Toss-up '48/'54 Tribe

Glad to see the game playing has begun.

Liked the M's overcoming a 3-0 deficit.

A quick word about the 1977 Phillies and 2016 Cubs game. It was a game played manually between my son and me. What great fun! It has been a while since we played each other head-to-head. My son managed the Cubs and I managed the Phillies -- and admittedly I was fairly lucky in this game in that the splits seemed to turn up in my favor more often than not. Notably, Anthony Rizzo had a HR 1-10 to lead off the fourth which was reduced to a double after the split card of 11.

As many of you know, I am not a small ball type manager. But that's exactly, what I did to manufacture a win. Arrietta was in complete control of the game tossing a no-hitter until Hebner stroked a basehit in the 7th inning. But the Phils scored their first run in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. McBride walked to start the inning and proceeded to steal second. Bowa bunted him to third. Schmidt hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run.

Larry Christensen and Ron Reed made that run stand up until the 9th inning. McGraw replaced Reed. The first two batters reached base before McGraw got Fowler and Bryant out. That brought Anthony Rizzo to the plate and Gene Garber to the mound. Rizzo stroked a base hit tying the game. Zobrist flied out to end the inning.

Mike Montgomery relieved Arrietta. The Phillies first two batters (Bowa and Schmidt) reached base bringing Jerry Martin to the plate. Martin entered the game as a defensive replacement for Greg Luzinski in the 8th inning. The Cubs decided to move to Aroldis Chapman. Martin laid down a bunt and the Cubs elected to take the sure out at first, rather than try for the force at third (1-14 chance of being safe). Cubs elected to pitch to Hebner with the infield and outfield in -- only it did not matter. Chapman balked, Bowa scored, game over.

My son had trouble sleeping last night fearing HAL was out to get him after that game. wink
