Steve Carlton pitched a complete game and left fielder Greg Luzinski had 5
hits and 4 RBI at Veterans Stadium as the Phila 1977 Phillies embarrassed the
New York 1927 Yankees by the lopsided score of 20 to 4.

Luzinski had a great evening at the plate. He stroked a one-base hit in the
1st inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in
the 4th inning, doubled plating two runs in the 7th inning and laced a
base-hit which brought home a run in the 7th inning. Phila 1977 bats were
very productive in the 1st inning which saw them score 4 runs on 5 hits, the
5th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits and the 7th inning with 9
runs on 10 hits. Phila 1977 totaled 26 hits on the night.

The victory went to Carlton(3-1) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. The
loss was charged to Dutch Ruether(3-2). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9
hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

With this win, Phila 1977 has a 11-13 record. They have been 3-7 lately. New
York 1927 has a record of 15-12 after the loss.

Ruth to Weaver: Not so fast, Woody Woodpecker!

1927 Yankees Take 5 of 6 from 1969 Orioles

1969 Orioles' manager, Earl Weaver, spent so much time on the field arguing calls with umpires and even butting them with the bill of his cap that Babe Ruth dubbed him "Woody Wood Pecker."

Having just swept division rival, the 1941 Dodgers, the 1969 Orioles came into the series with a commanding 8 game lead over the second place 1953 Dodgers and a nine game lead over the 1927 Yankees in the Elite League. Many of the experts had predicted that this division would be one of the toughest given the quality of teams. But in April the Orioles had made a joke of it, going 24-3 and 6-0 sweeping both of the Dodgers teams.

In Q4B III, teams play 18 games against division rivals and 6 games against teams outside the division. So on May 1, the 1927 Yankees and the red hot 1969 Orioles were squaring off for a very important series if the Yankees were to climb back into the race. Adding to the excitement of the series was the history of these two clubs in Q4B. In season 1, the Yankees defeated the Orioles in the ALCS to advance the World Series. In Q4B II, the Orioles not only defeated the 1927 Yankees to advance to the World Series, but went on to become champions. So the 1927 Yankees had plenty of incentive to do well in the series.

But no one, not even Ruth, would have expected a 5-1 domination:

After the series, there was lots of discussion around Mike Cuellar and his 7-0 record and 0.60 era. Concerning the suggestions, he might be using, Cuellar had an unlikely defender, Babe Ruth, who quipped, "Naw ... he's not juicing, it's bionics. He's from the 60s and 70s, not the new millennium."

The Orioles couldn't stay as hot as they were. The competition is loaded.

Agreed. I was amazed that they could run up their record as much as they did. Even with the 5 losses to the Yankees they sit at the top of their division by 6 games with a 26 - 8 record. I'm astonished.

In 6 games Gehrig had two homers and Ruth had none, yet they still won 5 of 6....shows how great that team really was.

In 6 games Gehrig had two homers and Ruth had none, yet they still won 5 of 6....shows how great that team really was.

Yes, sir. Some of the games were one run differences where the Yankees won it in their last at bat which speaks to the quality of the Orioles. Three of the wins you can credit the pitching for the success and in the other two wins primarily the offense led to wins. It is always a great match up when these two teams get together. Will the Orioles be caught, we'll see. This outcome of this series has at least kept the Yankees in the hunt.

Part of the reason for the Yankees slow start has been Babe Ruth:
