2011-12 Full NBA Replay -- C&D Basic
Permalink

Hi all.

This will be a full NBA replay of the 2011-12 season.

The following rules are going to be used during the replay.

1. Opponent Defense Shot Results
2. F(1)/personal fouls
3. Rest
4. Rebounds
5. Action Deck
6. No 3-point shots
7. No Double-Team

1. Opponent Defense Shot Results
I'll use the Opponent Defense Shot Results from the game rules.

2. F-1/personal fouls
Many times we've seen the "F(2) monsters" like Karl Malone roll up personal fouls on the defense, putting players on the bench so fast that it becomes unfair. Sometimes a star player, like Jordan, will have to go to the bench early in the 1st quarter and sit the rest of that quarter with 2 quick fouls. It can happen even when using a foul assignment chart. Before you know it, the starting 5 are in foul trouble and become useless rotting on the bench. Besides, F2 on a shooter's card doesn't mean that the shooter was fouled. It's simply another of Strat's ratings based on total free throw attempts. I have a solution. Most SOM players won't like this because of the realism factor. Oh, well, can't please everyone. This is a drastic change in the way most have been playing SOM basketball.

In my replay, players are not charged with a personal foul. PF's do not accumulate, players are never in "foul trouble", and players cannot "foul out". Therefore, all your players are always available at all times, especially the star players, which is very important. Stars help make the team what it is. By having to put the stars on the bench the team changes and becomes much less effective. To me, this hurts the great teams too much, and the SOM basketball game itself. Who wants to even continue playing when players like Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, Malone, Bird, or Abdul-Jabbar are stuck on the bench in foul trouble the whole game!!!! Not me. To control usage, see #3 below.

F(1)- Shoot one foul shot. Simple as that. Since fouls aren't charged to players or teams, the Penalty Situation isn't used then. It's also has bothered me too that it is taking away a scoring opportunity, which hurts teams. The F(1) is very important. Players with high F(1) numbers should hurt their teams by allowing points.

3. Rest
Since I have the PC version as well, the players that are used will be the actual players that played in the game IRL. Their names will be marked as "E" (eligible) and then they will be given their individual playing time by the computer coach. Also, since I am using the players that are on the actual box score, there will be no injuries. There will be marked cards placed at the 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 minute time remaining in the quarter. Based on the computer manager's instructions, the players will be substituted for at the specific time.

4. Rebounds
I don't give rebounds for missed free throws. Opponent looks at Control and play proceeds.

5. Basic Action Deck (BAD)
Basic action deck will be used.

6. 3-point shots
I won't be using 3-point shots. Going old school. No reason actually, just that I prefer to play this way. Having to make that decision for both teams i'm playing isn't fair. Some teams will shoot 20-25 3's one game and then 10-15 another. I'm not making the decision "when do I" and "how many" for 2 teams playing solitaire.

7. No Double-Team
No double-teaming during the game. The reasoning for no double-teaming is simple. The cards are created using the player's statistics for the full season, which also includes stats from when players are double-teamed. It would be like penalizing the player a second time.

There was finally an agreement and new CBA is now in place, ending the lockout. The NBA is going to go with a 66-game schedule starting on Christmas Day. Some teams may play 2 or 3 nights in a row with this new schedule.

Here is the schedule for Christmas Day, 2011. Games will be played in order based on the order on the PC.

Boston at New York

Miami at Dallas

Chicago at Los Angeles Lakers

Orlando at Oklahoma City

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State

I broke down and purchased a laptop and put the SOM PC game on it so that I can get the actual players enabled for each game.

Game #3

Chicago Bulls (1967 - Pres) (0-0) 81 at Los Angeles Lakers (2002 - Pres) (0-0) 79

(Actual Score: Chicago 88, LA Lakers 87)

The Lakers rallied from a 7-point deficit after 3 quarters to tie the game with about 4:30 left in the 4th quarter on a couple of baskets by Kobe Bryant. After baskets by Richard Hamilton and Derrick Rose gave the Bulls a 4-point lead, Bryant pulled the Lakers to within one, 76-75, with 2:00 remaining. Troy Murphy and Rose traded a free throw each then Rose sank a basket to put the Bulls up by 2 before Bryant dropped in a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1:00 to play. Hamilton made a clutch shot to give the Bulls the lead and Chicago held on as Bryant missed a shot at the buzzer. Bryant finished the game with a game high 32 points, the 14th straight regular season game in which he totaled at least 20. The Lakers fell to 4-9 on Christmas Day. Rose led the Bulls with 21 points.

Game #4

Miami Heat (2000 - Pres) (0-0) 99 at Dallas Mavericks (2002 - Pres) (0-0) 84

(Actual Score: Miami 105, Dallas 94)

Dallas received a championship banner for Christmas. Miami, the team that it defeated to win the NBA Finals last season, got a little revenge. LeBron James scored a game-high 31 points and Dwayne Wade added 22 as the Heat rained down on the celebration in Dallas and snapped a long losing streak to Dallas in the regular season with a wire-to-wire 99-84 victory. Dallas, led by Dirk Nowitzki's (23 points) and Jason Terry (14 points), had won 14 straight regular season games against Miami. James came up a point short of tying Miami's record for points in a season opener, which was set by Tim Hardaway with 32 on Nov. 2, 1999 against the Pistons. James was 11-24 from the field and 9-10 from the stripe with 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals. Dallas held a 2-point lead after the first quarter and held a 6-point lead before Wade and Dexter Pittman sunk baskets to pull the Heat to within a bucket with 2:00 remaining in the first half. The turning point in this game was when Miami went on a pair of 12-4 runs to begin the second half and held a 15-point lead before Dallas had cut the Heat's lead to 11, 73-62 after 3 quarters. Heat rookie guard Norris Cole scored 12 points and 2 rebounds in his NBA debut.

I'll keep an eye on the action.  Wouldn't mind seeing more of those 1987 college football games, but I know C&D with that many teams can be overwhelming.  Perhaps a single elimination tournament is in order.

I did do one and posted it last year with only the championship game being broken down quarter by quarter.

I still have my stuff for the full season for it but packed it away, along with a bunch of other things, so that my brother could "bomb" my room due to our cats having a flea problem that wasn't getting any better last summer. I could take it out and put it in a rotation with this replay plus a 1972 NFL replay with another game.

Oh, I almost forgot. I also have a 1972 NFL replay that just started with SOM C&D Basic.

The postings for all of them may be slow due to lots of overtime at work but that is starting to wind down as the person who I am filling in for is about to come back to work after suffering a car accident a couple of months ago.
