1972 NFL Replay -- C&D Basic
Permalink

Above is the link to a show about the 1972 Miami Dolphins and their undefeated season, going 17-0 including playoffs and Super Bowl.

Since next season (2017) will mark the 45th anniversary, I'm going to go ahead and replay the season.

My usual rules for any NFL replay:

1) C&D BASIC (It's the only way I play) with a play calling chart calling all offensive plays

2) Player usage will be based on the actual box score.

2a) If a runner and/or receiver gets his actual carries and/or receptions for the game, that player will not get another carry nor reception until all others have gotten to their number. Then any extra carries or catches will be distributed evenly among those players that were on the box score.

2b) No injuries unless when applicable (For example, Bob Griese was injured during a game and missed almost the rest of the regular season.)

3) Any transactions involving "skill" position players (QB, HB, FB, TE, SE, FL) made during the season will be made on their actual dates. This may cause a team to be shorthanded but rule 2a will still apply.

4) The timing of the games will be the actual number of offensive plays that were in the actual game. This way there will be no extra plays nor will I be leaving any plays "on the table".

4a) If a team is in field goal range at the end of the first half, the field goal attempt will be tried. The field goal attempt will be attempted if the team is in field goal range at the end of the 2nd half providing that it will be to tie or win the game. HOWEVER, if the kick is outside his kicking range (for example if a team never attempted a 50+ yard kick), the kick will not be attempted. The field goal range for each kicker will be based on his longest successful field goal during the season. This is also being done in an effort to keep field goal attempts down because I have seen many replays where the kickers attempted a lot more field goals than they actually did. For example, I read on another site about a kicker that attempted 35 in real life attempting 50 during the replay. I have found that attempting to keep FGA down by limiting the longest attempt to the kicker's actual longest to be effective.

5) NO PENALTIES (since this is with the original "large card" set)

Ron Johnson has looked great in camp and is coming back from a knee injury last season and Norm Snead, acquired in a trade which sent Fran Tarkenton to the Vikings, is a pinpoint passer. The Giants, as well as the other New York team, the Jets, could cause problems for the No-Name defense. We'll see when the time comes.

I wouldn't be surprised if you see them on top of the division for at least the first part of the season. They had a meltdown in real life otherwise they probably could have won the division. Gabriel was also playing through a sore shoulder during the season.

Which do you prefer? That is what matters.

Whether people choose to read all of it or not should not dictate how you want to present your project.

If you replace the o with a 0 you can get rid of the **** in the name. That is Activeboard's call not mine.

I prefer shorter ones with a score, top performances, and a write-up that includes some key plays, situations, how the game affects the standings or league leaders, etc.

Week 1

Game #4

1:00pm Start

Oakland Raiders (1964 - 1981) (0-0-0) 3 at Pittsburgh Steelers (1969 - 2001) (0-0-0) 18

(Actual Score: Pittsburgh 34, Oakland 28)

It was over when...

Roy Gerela booted an 18 yard field goal with 2:50 remaining to make it a three score game. Following an interception by Jack Ham, Pittsburgh had the ball with 5:10 left on the Oakland 40 and Terry Bradshaw got the drive started with a 4 yard run up the middle. After a 16 yard run by Steve Davis, a pass by Bradshaw fell incomplete. A couple of scrambles by Bradshaw netted 9 yards to make it 4th and 1 at the Oakland 11 and Gerela came on and kicked the field goal.

Game Balls

Oakland: Daryle Lamonica was 7-12 passing for 78 yards in relief of starter Ken Stabler, who threw and INT and was sacked three times, once for a safety.

Pittsburgh: John McMakin caught 4 passes for 95 yards, including a 35 yard TD.

Key Stats

Pittsburgh held Oakland to 99 yards rushing on 28 attempts while amassing 153 yards on 43 rushing attempts.

Noteworthy

Terry Bradshaw was 10-23 for 146 yards passing with a TD and 3 INT. He also ran for 48 yards on 8 carries. Rookie running back Franco Harris struggled as he ran for only 24 yards on 11 carries.

I forgot one more "ground rule". I limit any interception returns to the interceptor's longest return.
