Hot start at bat nets no decision for MadBum

Madison Baumgartner became the first pitcher in Major League history to homer twice on Opening Day, yet walked away with a no-decision.

The Giants lost, 6-5, to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Baumgartner's second homer broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning.  The homers came off pitchers Zach Greinke and Andrew Chafin.  But San Francisco reliever Derek Law allowed base hits to the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth, as the D-B's tied the game again.

San Francisco took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, only to lose a short time later, when reliever Mark Melancon gave up run-scoring singles to Daniel Decalso and Chris Owings.

I know you can find it somewhere on the intrawebs, but I wonder how many times a pitcher has homered twice in a game...............besides Rick Wise and Tony Cloninger of course LOL.........

The record is actually three in one game, by Guy Hecker (1886) and Jim Tobin (1942).

http://research.sabr.org/journals/pitchers-as-home-run-hitters

Here's a really cool fact from that SABR article: Two relievers -- Tiger hurlers Jess Doyle (1925) and Babe Birrer (1955) each homered twice in a game.   For Birrer, his blasts were a pair of three-run shots.

Tony Cloninger's two-granny effort came just three weeks after an earlier two-homer performance.

Wes Ferrell had five two-homer games in his career, two of them in 1934.  Several other pitchers have also had a pair of two-homer games in one season.
