Leon Hooten

Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Leon Hooten played professional baseball for six seasons, including a handful of games in the majors.

While at the University of Arizona, Hooten pitched in the 1970 College World Series. After college, he signed with the Oakland Athletics and made his pro debut with the Coos Bay-North Bend A's in 1971. He reached the majors early in the 1974 and posted a 3.24 ERA in 6 outings with the club. Following the 1976 season, he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the expansion draft. However, he was released before the team's inaugural season and never pitched professionally again.

His BBRef photo which was used by the Strat community in the photo set is as a Blue Jay! He can't even get a photo as a member of the A's. His SABR bio is pretty thorough and has a picture of Hooten as an Athletic (I will update his picture myself). He served in the Army Reserves. It also says he was called up on April 13th. If that is true the Strat TRN file for 1974 AL has an error. Hooten started the season on the active roster. Hooten is a great example of learning BB history through Strat. The guy barely cracked the majors over 40 years ago and here we are discussing him!

Little tidbit........Herb Washington at one time owned quite a few McDonald's franchises in my hometown (Rochester, NY).

He owned them when I used to manage McDonald's (1989-1992).  I never met him but I heard all about him and what a jerk he was.

Who is this beat writer you refer to? Is he a member of the BBWAA? Does he have a Hall of Fame vote? Is he friends with Max Mercy? Can you find his musings on the intrawebs? Has he been nominated for a Pulitzer?

14 April Game 1
An otherwise great pitching performance by Steve Hargan turned into defeat. Leading 1-0 courtesy of a Jeff Burrough's Homerun, Reggie Jackson Doubled followed by a Joe Rudi Double. Jim Merrit was summoned to fave Pat Borque. Bourque was in the game because Gene Tenace had been lifted for PR Herb Washington back in the 7th inning. Merrit did his job, Lloyd Allen entered the game and got no help when Toby Harrah made an error. Kubiak was intentionally walked to load the bases. Allen lost the strike zone and walked in the winning run.

Oakland won the game with a rally in the 9th inning plating 2 runs using 2 hits. Reggie Jackson led off and started the attack as he doubled. Joe Rudi stepped into the batter's box and he doubled bringing in a run. After an out was recorded, Ray Fosse then reached on an error. Ted Kubiak was up next and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Manny Trillo came to the plate and drew a walk making Oakland the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. The win went to Hunter(2-0) who allowed 1 run in the game. Steve Hargan(0-1) ended up with the loss. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. Hunter and Jackson were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Al Dark noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Texas scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Jeff Burroughs cracked a
solo homerun. Texas managed only 6 hits on the afternoon.

Jenkins(2-0) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Blue Moon Odom(0-1)
was the losing pitcher. He allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 8 innings.

Jenkins, when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The important
thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team?
But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'

15 April-White Sox on a 6 game win streak
Both teams were swinging the lumber, but the White Sox prevailed 8-7. Dick Allen went deep and had an RBI Single. In the 5th Bando drew a bases loaded walk. Reggie Jackson followed that with a 2 run Double. The Sox answered with 3 runs in the top of the 6th. Campy and Alou hit RBI Singles n the bottom of the 6th. In the 8th Bando hit an RBI Double and scored on the play's error. Herb Washington stole his 1st base and also got caught trying to steal 3rd.
