1974 Oakland A's Replay
Permalink

16 April
Oakland ends the White Sox winning streak. Rollie Fingers is still struggling blowing another save allowing 3 hits and a sac fly. In the bottom of the 9th Bill Moran loaded the bases. Terry Forster (who has been overworked) was summoned for a lefty lefty matchup with Reggie Jackson. Reggie bested him with a game winning Single.

Herb Washington came in and got caught stealing again..1SB/2CS. There is more to stealing bases than just speed Herb (the Strat note...he has been caught both times when he had at least a 75% chance success rate)

Washington was by far the least skilled of all of Finley's pinch runners. Many in the game said he couldn't even shag flies in the outfield before games.

I remember him.  He was Finley's "designated runner".  I recall at the time the view that Washington was, in part, an advertisement of sorts for Finley's push to get a designated runner rule adopted in the American League.  Given his rather mediocre stealing percentage, I'd say he was a poor ambassador for the rule change.  I remember SOM at the time providing a base stealing and running rating for him and saying he could be added to the A's roster.  In fact, here's the roster sheet where that appears - https://s3.amazonaws.com/digital_museum/Baseball+Rosters/1975+Rosters+2.pdf

Herbie was a track athlete. All of his other pinch runners were actual players (Alan Lewis, Matt Alexander, Don Hopkins, Larry Lintz, etc.) I think he may have played in high school, but I suspect even that was an exaggeration. Many of the A's actually liked him well enough--they just resented the use of a major league roster spot for a non-player. And they hated Finley anyway and it gave them another reason.

Second baseman Manny Trillo had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Vida Blue reeled off a
total of 13 strikeouts as the Oakland A's defeated the Chicago White Sox by a
score of 9 to 3 at Oakland Co Stadium.

Trillo enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He tripled clearing all three
ducks off the pond in the 2nd inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 4th
inning, delivered a single in the 6th inning and laced a base-knock bringing
in a run in the 7th inning. Oakland had 12 hits for the night.

Blue(2-1) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Stan Bahnsen(2-2) was
charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs
in 6 and 1/3 innings.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Blue offered, 'The fan's
really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up
there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of course, it
would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

He gave up a run today via the longball, but he was allowed to work through it.

20 April
California got out quick and held off the A's for the 5-4 win. Ken Holtzman got hit hard again. Number 9 hitter Denny Doyle hit a 2 run Double in the 2nd inning. Joe Rudi hit a 2 run Homerun in the 4th. Mike Epstein took Rollie Fingers deep in the 7th. Nolan Ryan walked in 2 runs in the 8th before recording an out. Dave Sells came in with the bases juiced and dd not allow another run. The teams combined for 21 stranded baserunners so this thing easily could have been much higher scoring. Herb Washington did steal a base today.

Nolan Ryan reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts at Oakland Co Stadium where the
California Angels beat the Oakland A's 5 to 4.

Ryan(3-2) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 7 hits and 9 walks in 7
innings. Dave Sells pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd
save.

Ken Holtzman(0-3) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits
and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Ryan was asked about his big strikeout
performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the
road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets
real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the
crowd out of the game.'
