Enjoying this replay. I've always been intrigued the A's of the early 70s. Great to follow them day by day.

Baltimore nips the A's 3-2. Boog Powell (this is not a misprint) hit an RBI Triple in the 4th. Gene Tenace led off the 8th with a Triple but was erased on the ball hit back to the pitcher. Coggins and Davis collected 8th inning RBI Singles. In the 9th Oakland came to life. Sal Bando hit an RBI Double. Reggie Jackson hit an RBI Single. Bob Reynolds was summoned from the bullpen, but he allowed a Double to Joe Rudi. Gene Tenace ended the game on a groundout.

Hated the A's after they defeated the Reds in 1972, but grew to respect and even like the team. They were a lot better that year than many were willing to admit. Then Finley dismantled the team. The Reds had a deal for Vida Blue, but it was nixed by Bowie Kuhn.

Finley wanted to dismantle the team as he recognized that he was going to lose players to free agency. So he tried to trade them but Kuenn disallowed it. Kuenn was wrong. By the late ups it was a common practice among Baseball owners to trade players they might lose to free agency.

Baltimore came out on top 5-4 today. They put up 3 runs in the 2nd inning on Jim Fuller's 2 run Homerun and Paul Blair's RBI Single. Bill North, who had been struggling badly, hit a solo Homerun, Double, then a Triple plating 3 times. Reggie Jackson hit an RBI Single in the 8th scoring North. In the bottom of the 8th Fuller struck again taking Leon Hooten deep. Bob Reynolds earned another save. Ken Holztman had had another lackluster start and has 0 wins this season.

The early 70s A's were this great team that is just of out my 1st hand memory. When I first started following MLB the Big Red Machine was king, but I knew they had just taken over the kings of baseball from these A's. In my Strat attempt to learn about them I have used the 71 and 72 team in mixed league projects. At some point the SADV 73 team will get into the mix.

To TT's point. I remember the A's after the dismantling and how bad they were. As a kid it certainly didn't make sense to me. Baseball economics were not on my mind in the late 70s
