First African-born player makes MLB debut

Gift Ngoepe made his Major League debut Wednesday night with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ngoepe is the first player born in Africa to ever play in the Major Leagues.  He made his way through a baseball academy in Italy after having been a member of the South African Baseball World Cup and World Baseball Classic teams since 2007.

He banged out a base hit and drew a walk in three plate appearances during the Pirates' 6-5 win over the Cubs.  Ngoepe -- a second baseman who hails from South Africa -- entered the game in the fourth inning, when the Pirates made a double-switch.

He replaced starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow in the batting order, and singled in his first plate appearance.

Ngoepe is 27 years old.  He has a brother, Victor, who is 19 and was signed by the Pirates last year.

"No cell, no car, no credit cards, he's sixty-plus and gray...
Just sitting in his basement, with a Strat game underway."

That is an interesting tidbit. There are baseball academies all over the place.
