National League Series 1B

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres

Giants 4, Padres 3

The game is tied at 2-2 after eight innings. The Giants score two runs in the ninth, and the Padres can only get one of them back in the bottom of the frame. All of San Diego's runs come on solo homers from Ollie Brown, Nate Colbert and Cito Gaston. The Giants score their runs on a more sustained attack of 11 hits.

Padres 2, Giants 1 (10 innings)

Dave Roberts outduels Juan Marichal in a low-scoring affair. Cito Gaston wins the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the tenth.

Giants 10, Padres 4

Dick Dietz slams a pair of homeruns and Willie Mays adds another late in a 10-4 thrashing of the Padres.

Two homeruns and 5 RBI from Dick Dietz lead to an easy Giants win

Giants 6, Padres 2

Tito Fuentes leads the way with three hits for San Fran. The Padres once again waste their power when no one's on base, as homeruns from Larry Stahl and Ollie Brown are of the solo variety and do nothing to close the gap.

National League Series 1C

New York Mets at Montreal Expos

Mets 6, Expos 1

Ed Kranepool homers in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie, then adds a three-run bomb in the ninth for insurance, giving him 5 RBI on the day. Tom Seaver strikes out eight Expos in going the distance.

Mets 4, Expos 1

For the second straight game, New York pitching holds the Expos to 1 run on 5 hits. Cleon Jones hits a homerun for the Metropolitans.

Mets 2, Expos 0

Mets pitching clamps down even harder on Expos bats, as this time Nolan Ryan and Tug McGraw combine for the shutout. Craig Morton is the tough-luck loser.

Mets 5, Expos 4

Montreal finally gets some runs and takes a 1-run lead into the top of the ninth at Jarry Parc. With one out, a Gary Sutherland error puts a man on, allowing Donn Clendenon to step up and deliver a pinch-hit, go ahead, 2-run homer that stood as the winner.

Great pitching by the Mets in that series!

National League Series 1D

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers

Astros 2, Dodgers 1

Don Wilson goes the distance on Opening Day for Houston. He helps his own cause with a 5th-inning double, on which he comes around to score what ends up being the winning run.

Dodgers 3, Astros 2

Maury Wills scores twice and Don Sutton picks up the win as the Dodgers even the series.

Dodgers 4, Astros 1

Duke Sims launches a 2-run homerun in the second inning, providing the necessary run support for Al Downing, who effectively scatters the nine hits he allows.

Astros 7, Dodgers 1

Houston gets all but one of their runs in the middle innings, spurred by Doug Rader and his three doubles.

Reds 2, Braves 1

The Reds win their traditional home opener on a pinch-hit RBI single from Bernie Carbo in the bottom of the ninth.

Reds 4, Braves 1

Don Gullet goes eight strong, while Hal McRae and Tony Perez provide the power on offense.

Braves 4, Reds 1

The Braves avoid the sweep behind a solid start from Pat Jarvis.

If I recall correctly, the Reds had the best second half of any team in 1971.  Let's see which Reds team shows up for this replay.

Given how good the '70 and '72 teams were, the one in between should at least have a chance. Especially because the Giants and Dodgers are not exactly flawless themselves. Throw in the wild card of a short season and I wouldn't be shocked if they contended.

National League Series 1F

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs

Phillies 7, Cubs 0

The visiting Phillies crash Opening Day at Wrigley with a 7-0 shutout of the Cubbies. Rick Wise is dominant on the mound and Deron Johnson is dominant at the dish, going 3-for-5 with a homerun, 2 doubles and 4 RBI.

http://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/59553/59553-7Fr.jpg

Deron Johnson has a big day in the opener at Wrigley

Cubs 6, Phillies 3

A big 5-run sixth inning propels Milt Pappas and the Cubs past Philly.

Cubs 5, Phillies 4

Homeruns from Joe Pepitone and Jim Hickman help Bill Hands and Phil Regan outlast the Phillies.

Cubs 2, Phillies 1

After the embarrassing showing on Opening Day, the Cubs rally to take their third straight and win the series. Billy Williams' RBI double in the 5th breaks the tie and stands as the game winner. Ken Holtzman goes the distance for Chicago.

Ameircan League Series 2

I'm going to try something new and report out multiple series at a time, instead of one-by-one

Baltimore Orioles at Cleveland Indians

Orioles 8, Indians 2

Orioles 5, Indians 3 (11 innings)

Orioles 10, Indians 5 (10 innings)

Indians 13, Orioles 10

https://www.biography.com/.image/t_share/MTIwNjA4NjMzOTU1NTgzNTAw/frank-robinson-9460731-2-raw.jpg

Robby crushes four homers in the series

This is the first series so far that featured solid hitting throughout. Frank Robinson hits the game-winning homerun in the top of the 11th of the second game, and added three more throughout the series. Mark Belanger, never to be mistaken as a solid hitter, collects eight hits in the series, including four doubles. Boog Powell only goes 1-for-9 in the series, but gets on base nonetheless by drawing eight walks.

Oakland A's at Minnesota Twins

A's 8, Twins 3

A's 7, Twins 0

A's 9, Twins 7

A's 5, Twins 4

The A's sweep the Twins in Minnesota. Vida Blue strikes out 13 batters in the opener, then Cattfish Hunter follows him up with a shutout in Game 2. In the third game, Joe Rudi breaks a ninth inning tie with a 2-run double. Oakland completes the sweep with late homeruns from Mike Epstein and Rick Monday.

Detroit Tigers at Washington Senators

Tigers 9, Senators 1

Tigers 7, Senators 1

Senators 6, Tigers 5

Tigers 6, Senators 3

Mickey Lolich and Joe Coleman fire complete games as the Tigers easily take the first two games. Despite a pair of homeruns from Bill Freehan in the third game, they fall on a late RBI single by Del Unser for Washington. Freehan has a terrific series overall, going 7-for-12 with 2 homeruns, a double, a triple, 6 runs scored and 7 RBI.

Bill Freehan tore apart Washington pitching

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Yankees 5, Red Sox 1

Yankees 6, Red Sox 2

Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

Yankees 2, Red Sox 1 (10 innings)

The Yankees take three of four, despite a fine series from Yaz (9-for-18, 3 homeruns, 2 doubles). A crucial error by the usually sure handed George Scott leads to the 10th-inning winning run in the finale.

http://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/63973/63973-8Fr.jpg

Yaz's big series goes mostly to waste

Kansas City Royals at California Angels

Royals 3, Angels 1

Royals 4, Angels 0

Royals 3, Angels 2 (10 innings)

Royals 5, Angels 1

The Angels anemic offense lets them down in a a four-game sweep at the hands of the visiting Royals. They hit a pathetic .144 as a team in the series, an even worse showing than what they offered in the opening series with Oakland. Highlighting the dominant pitching, game three doesn't have a baserunner for either team until the top of the 5th. The Angels don't get a hit until the 7th. Amos Otis and Gail Hopkins hit back-to-back homers in the final game.

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago White Sox

White Sox 4, Brewers 2

White Sox 3, Brewers 2

Brewers 3, White Sox 1

White Sox 4, Brewers 2

The White Sox take three of four from the Brewers. Walt Williams wins Game 2 with a walkoff single. Dick Egan wins the final game with a walkoff homerun.

Disappointing series for my Red Sox. Those Orioles & A's teams were tough.

Yeah, rough start for the Sox... and the Orioles and A's are indeed the clear favorites. Still, the Sox still get to play the woeful Senators and Indians as a chance to rebound before a round of series against the West teams, who outside of Oakland, are nothing special.
