ARIZONA TEAM TOURNAMENT ROUND 2

(4) 07 ARI defeats (1) 99 ARI 4-3

The agony of defeat!  In a back and forth series, 99 ARI was up 3-1 in the top of the 9th of game 7.  Matt Mantei (99 ARI) entered the game and allowed a one out single and a 2 out walk.  Eric Byrnes (07 ARI) stepped up for to the plate and hit a routine fly ball to right.  The crowd went wild aaaand Bernard Gilkey dropped the ball scoring 2 runs.  Orlando Hudson (07 ARI) stepped up to the plate and roped a double to left center for a 4-3 lead.  Jose Valverde entered in the bottom of the 9th and retired the side in order.  Just like that, the 07 ARI team is going to the finals instead of the 99 team!

(3) 11 ARI defeats (2) 02 ARI  4-3

In this crazy series, each team hit 11 home runs over the 7 games.  In game 5, Erubiel Durazo (02 ARI) hit a walk off home run in the 10th inning to give 02 ARI a 3-2 lead in the series.  11 ARI stormed back in game 6 to even the series with a 7-1 victory.  The stage was set.  11 ARI scored 2 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd for a 3-0 lead.  Eric Byrnes erased that lead with a 3 run blast in the bottom of the 7th.  Both teams had numerous chances to win and Justin Upton (11) ARI helped his team do just that with a rbi single in the top of the 15th scoring Ryan Roberts to advance 11 ARI to the finals.

ARIZONA TEAM TOURNAMENT FINALS

GAME 1

07 ARI   0 1 2  0 0 2  0 4 1    10-18-0

11 ARI   0 0 3  5 1 0  0 1 0      9-10-2

W- Lyon     L- Putz     S- Valverde

HR 07 Young (4), 11 Montero (4)

Pitching was non existent in this game. 11 ARI had a 9-3 lead after the 5th inning highlighted by a M. Montero 3 run Hr in the 4th.  07 ARI C. Young hits a 3 run shot in the top of the 8th to take the lead only to have 11s L. Overbay tie it back up with a rbi double in the bottom of the 8th.  J.J. Putz was saddled with the loss after allowing the winning run to score on a L. Overbay 2 base error.  A tough loss in a poorly pitched game.  07 ARI is up 1-0

ARIZONA TEAM TOURNAMENT FINALS

GAME 2

07 ARI  0 0 1  0 0 0  0 0 0    1-5-1

11 ARI  0 0 0  0 0 2  0 0 x    2-6-2

W-Kennedy    L-Webb     S-Putz

HR 11 Young (3)  11 Upton (2)

A complete opposite of game 1, pitching reigned.  11 ARI evened the series on the right arm of I. Kennedy.  Kennedy allowed a 2 out double to 07 O. hudson in the 3rd to drive in the only run 11 ARI would yield on the night.  Ian went 7 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and one earned run while striking out 8.  11 J. Upton and C. young each hit solo HRs in the 6th inning off 07 B. Webb.  Webb pitched well in his 7 innings of work, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 11.  The series is now tied at 1.

11 ARI exploded for 10 runs in the 5th inning en route to a 13-0 victory.  They hit 4 home runs in the inning off of L. Hernandez and J. Cruz. J. Saunders (11 ARI) pitched well, throwing 8 1/3 innings of 7 hit ball and striking out 7.  11 ARI is now up 2 games to 1

ARIZONA TEAM TOURNAMENT FINALS

GAME 4

11 ARI  0 0 0  1 0 0  2 0 0     3- 6-0

07 ARI  0 0 0  0 0 1  0 4 X     5-10-0

W- J. Cruz  L- J. Peterson  S- J. Valverde

HR 07 ARI  C. Young (5), M. Montero (5)

Game 4 was the M. Montero show.  For 11 ARI, Montero went 3-3 with an rbi and a run scored.  Not to be outdone, 07 ARI Montero was 1-3 with a game winning grand slam in the 8th off of D. Hernandez.  J. Valverde entered in the 9th and retired 11 ARI in order for his 7th save of the tournament.  The series is now knotted at 2 apiece.

ARIZONA TEAM TOURNAMENT FINALS

GAME 5

07 ARI   1 0 0  0 1 0  0 0 2       4 - 7-0

11 ARI   1 0 1  0 4 4  1 0 X     11-11-0

W- D. Hudson  L- M. Owings

HR  07 ARI C. Young (6)   11 ARI  S. Drew (4), M. Montero (7)

11 ARI hit grand slams in the 5th and 6th innings and clobbered 07 ARI 11-4.  S. Drew hit a slam in the 5th and M. Montero hit his slam in the 6th.  That's 5 home runs in his last 5 games for Montero! 07 ARI made a little noise in the 9th were too far behind to really threaten.  11 ARI takes a 3-2 lead.

GAME 6

11 ARI  0 1 0  2 0 0  0 0 1     4-9-1

07 ARI  0 0 0  0 0 0  0 1 0     1-3-2

W- I. Kennedy  L- B. Webb  S- J. Putz

HR  11 ARI  S. Drew (5)

Ian Kennedy pitched brilliantly and the 2011 Arizona Diamondbacks advance to the Tournament Of Champions.  Kennedy had a no hitter through 7 1/3 before 07 Arizonas M. Montero broke through with a single.  Ian lost his composure a little and walked the next two batters he faced.  D.Hernandez entered only allowed a sac fly rbi in the inning.  S.Drew provided an insurance run in the 9th with his 5th HR of the tournament.  M. Montero (11ARI) has been named tournament MVP.  He batted .377 with 6 doubles, a triple and 7 home runs.  Montero drove in 23 and scored 18 runs in the tournament.  Honorable mention goes to Ian Kennedy who went 4-0 with a 3.41 era.

Me too.  It's a shame they lost in the 15th of game 7, I thought they were the most talented  Arizona team.

Early prediction: A lot of home runs in that tourney.

Any though as to what you'll do when this tournament is finished?  Maybe set up bracket-style champions tourney, with each of the franchise-winning clubs advancing from the A.L. and N.L. side for an eventual overall championship?

Think BIG! biggrin

As a mets fan, I'm proud the 95 team won their bracket. Mainly because in 95' I turned 10 and the seeds of being a Met fan were planted, well a few years earlier but i don't remember much about it.. 96' team was when i became a diehard really but still, alot of fond memories during that time. I'm glad 07' and 2015 teams didn't win it all, great disappointment leaves a bitter taste.

I had planned on doing a 32 team tournament with all of the winners plus 2 wild card teams but I thinkI like your idea of an AL and NL bracket. So, two 16 team tournament of champions is the way to go. 15 winners plus a wild card for both the AL and NL tournaments with the winners facing each other for the overall.  Houston and Milwaukee will be my swing teams to even the brackets. With a little luck an AL and NL team will prevail in their team tournaments.
